Question on the mysterious character

*Spoilers ahead*

So I finished the main part of the game (Chapters 1-7) and am working on getting the hearts and the B-sides. Early on in the game Madeline gets a call from a mysterious man at a payphone. It seems like its someone she has a history with but the game doesn't seem to touch on it from there. Does the game explain who this character is later on, or is this just a one-off cutscene?

From the conversation, seems like an ex. Since the game is partially about the main character dealing with anxiety and learning to embrace herself and her flaws, it makes sense that she would have a conversation with someone she had a falling out with during a dream sequence. As far as I know, thats the only cutscene with this character.

I thought it was her father, because of the sweetheart line. I didn't think somebody she was in a relationship with once would be fine with her calling in the middle of the night after, apparently, months since they last talked.

Since once the dream sequence was over, she called her mother, maybe she wanted to check on her father?

In the script his label is EX_PHONE, so I guess that makes him Madeline's ex.

Yeah that's the impression I got from the scene. I felt like they were going to do more with that character, but I guess it worked out since we got such a good focus on Madeline and her progression. Damn what a good game

Also noticed that the sound files for damaging the boss contain the words "boss_hug"
So you're not attacking the boss, you're reaching out to her! (don't have to dash into her, just touch her, so it makes sense)
seems like these files are a goldmine for learning backstory and other not obvious things. :)

I think it all makes sense given the situation at the time and the actual hug at the end.

P.S. I want a sequel too. ♥
I'd like if it has Madeline and Badeline working together again (a plotline makes Badeline come out again, I guess)... except this time you have to control both girls and/or their abilities in order to pass the stages.

Maybe a multiplayer game (whether split screen or steam multiplayer) where one person is Madeline one is Badeline

Old thread here but more proof that it wasn't Madeline's dad. One of the photos on Theo's instagram account has a framed photo of Madeline's family, her dad has white hair and a different skin tone from the phone NPC.
