I also prefer that name
Badeline it is, then.
Badeline feels like she was named by a child who didn't understand what she represented. I would call her name one of the few blemishes on the near-perfect face of this game, but that'd be technically inaccurate as it's not in the game...but even so, I feel the image it paints of her is subpar at best, and I worry that (Should Madeline continue to cameo in more games—which I do hope for) she'll eventually lose all the significance she once had.
If it were up to me? I would have said that Madeline calls herself "Maddy" and her reflection takes the name "Eline." Has an air of mystique to it that's befitting of her supernatural origin, but moreso, she would represent the part of Madeline that she's rejected right down to her name.
Surely I can't be alone in this opinion, right?
I totally get you, though, Chaos. That's why I originally said I didn't like the name "Badeline", since it feels like it's trivializing her, and instead preferred "Dark Madeline", since that's what she is. I can also kinda get behind your Maddy and Eline idea- I like where you're going with the logic for it.
(It's really hard to write about an entity if you constantly have to refer to it being part of yourself.)
Mostly, I headcanon that Madeline refers to the other Part of Her as simply "Her" in the literal sense. As in "Every time you make contact with her, she looks a little less demonic and a little more desperate", not "her" as in Madeline.
That's your preview line of my upcoming fic, btw.
The name you give her doesn't show up in the conversations either so "The Part of You" makes sense with any name you give her.
Besides, Madeline and Badeline rhyme and fit the characters.
To me, it's sufficiently off-putting to see names that aren't "Madeline" in other people's videos. I think it would definitely have been a bad idea to give Part of You a separate name within the canon of the game itself- it's a way of acknowledging the themes of the game. All the characters are aware that she's not really a separate entity, and to reference her as such within canon would be to degrade the significant of the story and what it says about mental health and so forth. I do agree with Tenebrais in that sense.
Of course, that's just my opinion. Devs could have been thinking something totally different.
"Badeline" *is* a lot more convenient to throw around during development, I'm sure. XD
(It's going through a super long beta phase bc my betas are v busy ppl, but it will be done eventually! :3 )
