I'm disappointed about achievements
First of all I must say that I loved the game, it's more than great, but I want to share something that disappointed me.

Playing Celeste, you quickly realize that the game difficulty is pretty high. I "survived" this difficulty for days, because the feeling of finally finishing a stage that seemed almost impossible at first is GREAT! Getting a hard earned achievement, feels even better. When I recently had only 2 achievement remaining I decided to check youtube for solutions for the "1 up" achievement and I was SHOCKED to discover that you can unlock achievements in "assist mode", where you can be invincible, dash forever and play at slower speeds.

After that, I also found the devs response in an older thread that is currently closed, saying this is intentional. Man, right now I feel... sad. because the hard work of days feel pointless. The experience of playing the game is still there, but knowing other people are going to get the achievements I spent hours and hours to get without any effort makes me feel kinda stupid.

Once again, I love the game, but giving achievements to people using these assist modes feels like giving awards to cheaters... the achievements lost their purpose, to me...

I was considering trying the C sides for the achievement but right now I don't see the point, it was heart breaking for me...

They should at least give an exclusive achievement to people that finished the game without any assists...

What do you think?

The issue with assist mode is that there's isn't really a limit to having "assists" because with everything maxed, you're basically invincible. At the end of the day, no matter how you guys try to slice it, achievements ARE bragging rights( more so with games like this that are known for it's difficulty). I'm happy I got all the achievements without assist mode. The game was quite hard but fair to complete but it's still a bit annoying knowing that people who were essentially invincible got all those achievements. It's not that it affects me personally. Of course it doesn't.

The issue is that it dilutes the meaning of achievements in the context of this game. Taking time to get all the achievements takes practice and time. It requires you to nearly master the mechanics. Being able to do that with zero effort dilutes what achievements are. At the end of the day, I respect the dev's decision. It's their prerogative and I get why they felt they had to do it that way. But that doesn't mean I have to agree their decision.

Part of the theme is that the challenge is its own reward- I agree with you that it'd be nice if the achievements couldn't be cheesed so easily, but that just means people who only care about the achievement, and not the process of getting it, cheat themselves out of overcoming a challenge.

For what it's worth, I didn't use Assist mode at all when completing the content for that reason- I wanted to do it, and overcome that challenge, and so I did. Achievements as a number or unlock? Completely irrelevant to me.

instead of letting this break your heart and tarnish your enjoyment of the endgame.. why not just play the content because you enjoy it and want to challenge yourself? having a problem with this is a self-imposed issue, its strange that someone else's handicap really needs to affect how you feel about your own route or chosen challenge.

I understand that this request for appreciating the game over the achievements to fall on deaf ears, obviously we are opposed in our thinking, as made clear by the statement of heartbreaking.. still I chime in hoping for reason to prevail. I say this having nearly fully completed the game without assist mode, c-sides included/golden berries excluded, that I am not bothered by the devs decision, and it doesn't bother me that people who couldn't handle the challenge were still able to see the endgame content.

For me the associated achievements are quite tangential to what is most important; enjoying the game and getting as far as you are willing to push yourself. So you can see why a badge signifying what I have done to display on my profile for the world has far less value than simply completing the challenge that the achievement was rewarded for.

Doing that math it should be clear that while I would also personally encourage the more challenging route, no matter what I put more emphasis, stock and appreciation towards PLAYING the game as opposed to thinking that a small token, displayed outside of the game, indicating specific accomplishments mattered in any tangible way, its so below meaningless in the long run. I know the math here doesn't quite equate, but while I too prefer the Harder difficulty compared to Easy difficulty in a game, I still value someones experience playing Easy compared to caring about their Achievements.

IHNN put it pretty well, no one is cheating you by cheesing these achievements, they are only cheating themselves out of a rewarding challenge.

maybe if it really feels like you are cheated because other people can utilize a handicap to get the achievements, try to accept the devs decision and make sure to not display any achievements from this game on your profile because its so questionable if they are legit?

I m sorry if I came off as rude or demanding, It's just awkward, I would think for both of us, to empathize with each other and think of the best solution moving forward knowing that the dev has made up their mind

Thank you for the responses.

Once again, I know I should just enjoy the process but I can't help but still feel "cheated" for not knowing people can get them effortless before I started getting these achievements. It felt GREAT when I got them, but now they feel kinda "meh"

Being "inclusive" is great 95% of the time but when I think of achievements or awards I still think they lose their purpose. If you grant it to everyone, you`re basically giving it to no one...

It's like giving a oscar of best movie to every movie.

Why do you care so much how other people got their achievements? Does it really matter? Is it worth not even trying to to complete the C-sides? I just completed the last C-side and man...what a feeling :) I couldn't care less about other people's achievements. I'm proud of MY achievement of completing the game without any kind of assists.

True. its no wonder the achievement rate for this game is so high!

I believe it matters when it's part of a community with global achievement rates. I think I wouldn't be so sad if I knew it before I started playing. I would be aware of how things worked.

As for the C-sides, I may continue in the future, I'm just not in the mood at the moment. A great part of my enthusiasm of doing these harder contents came from the possibility of earning a hard-to-get achievement. Discovering people get them with little effort, after I invested so much effort, felt quite unpleasant and took my enthusiasm. I was REALLY happy when I finished all the B-sides.

Indeed, without assists I believe the hard ones would be around 1 or 2%.

Keep in mind that everyone who is interested in your achievements already knows whether you used Assist Mode to get them.
SoloWield Mar 8, 2019 @ 1:57pm
I feel the same tbh. I understand the dev's logic behind it but I still disagree. I mean, getting all the achievements is extremely challenging and I felt so satisfied when I finally got them all but learning that you can get them all with assist mode kind of lessened that feeling.

I don't understand why people care about how OTHER people get achievments, it's not like steam is a bragging platform.

I mean, I think it's a little lame people can cheese achievements, but you'd be amazed the number of games you can do this in. Odd to care this much, especially nowadays.

Can you specify other legit games with cheesable achievements? I want to be amazed.

Stardew Valley, Hollow Knight, Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2, Every FF title on steam, every IE title on steam, 20xx, N++, Owlboy
Or the impossible-until-not-too-long-ago achievement from Stanley that lots of people had ahead of time.

You didn't lie, I'm quite amazed!

Achievements are personal. How other people get is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ irrelevant.
