What's the best way to play this?

It is almost like anything works, and you should just use whatever you feel comfortable doing 2d platformers with.

Just take what's the most comfortable to you. Since all you do is pressing buttons, all controllers with buttons (keyboards, gamepads etc.) are equivalent and it really only depends on your preference. I always play games like this with a keyboard ... I hate controllers and I don't own any. But like I said, that's just my preference.

Well... yeah. Did you really expect something else? Everyone will tell you, which device he uses and that's the device, he's best with at this game.

I recommend playing the game with any controller. But, if you wanna do the ultra hard stages near the end of the game, you will need a controller with a good d-pad. I was playing with the Xbox360 controller, and that d-pad is ATROCIOUS. I had to constantly switch between the keyboard and the controller to stand a chance.

I prefer keyboard because joystick inputs are easier to mess up, like if you try to do a up-right dash but accidentally only go right. Also using a keyboard gives you a finger for each button since you don't hold a keyboard as you play with it.

i started playing with my steam controller but endet up using my switch controller because I think its better to have dpad, since a stick is to inaccurate.
edit: just saw that The Beserker wrote almost the same. You need a good dpad but for some stages an analog stick is the better choice. So take a controller which has both.

Let me say this, when you fly with the feather, the analog controls should be used because you can maintain speed if you don't rotate over 12 or 14 degrees on the turns (I forget the actual number). So rolling with the analog is the best method for that mechanic. If you want to take into account that mechanic I would reccommend a controller with an Analog stick.
If you don't care about such frugal things, I will also say this, the current wr speedrunner uses a keyboard, while the former wr holder uses a controller. Its not that much of a difference. By the way, the current wr for any% is 28m16s.
