It is almost like anything works, and you should just use whatever you feel comfortable doing 2d platformers with.

edit: just saw that The Beserker wrote almost the same. You need a good dpad but for some stages an analog stick is the better choice. So take a controller which has both.
WASD - Move,
Space - Jump,
Num 2 - Climb,
Num 3 - Dash.
If you don't care about such frugal things, I will also say this, the current wr speedrunner uses a keyboard, while the former wr holder uses a controller. Its not that much of a difference. By the way, the current wr for any% is 28m16s.
