there's even political commentary because peta protested against super meat boy.
and "momentum based platformer". with a lot of borrowed elements from super meat boy.
and if you confused it for super mario then even that goes flat. you have to save a princess. movment has more emphasis on intertia. that's kind of what made movment in that game so damn good.
Bandage girl got kidnapped by Dr. Fetus
Meat boy saves bandage girl
- The end
Sorry to say but if that constitutes as a "story" then basically every game has a story, the story in SMB is as shallow as it can be, the same can't be said for Celeste
but you said no story. small or not, that is a story, and at least it doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't.
meanwhile the allegory in celeste is how a non depressed person thinks depression is like. as if it could be seperate or just as simple as "negative self talk".
now i could forgive all of it, but here you come in pretending to be more enlightened and have a moral sense of superiority for playing a game with a story thats really not much more complex.
and not only that, this game beat out games with far greater complexity...
i could be just as reductive because she's doing a lot of it for a hot guy that looks like a white hipster in blackface. but i digress. Did you ask why it uses pixel art? and with colors that are just a migrane to look at?
and EVEN THEN the story in super meat boy isn't the end point, it is you gettting to that end point. it's the actual game play. just like in writing there is "show don't tell" in games it's "do, don't show".
Every chapter in Celeste makes sense and is coherent with its story and its music. And that separates it from games that do not focus on story-TELLING. The story in Meatboy is just there for fun, nothing more.
You just dislike the story then dislike the game. Yes, it's not a Witcher or Hollow Knight complex story, but it's a serious one, not the "Mario story" type.
hardly. the music is dull the pastel colors an assult on the eyes. it's sickening to look at.
what you said is like calling "see spot run" as the pinicle of literature.
but hey, how dare anyone have critical thinking and analysis of media.
at least mario is fun, has better mechanics, and can tell a story with out needing to use words.... Jesus christ. take off the rose tinted glasses.
if we're going to be that reductive then celeste is "slightly depressed girl" as asthetic and a personality.
the target audience is that kind of toxic tumblr user that would go on and on about postivity or how hard it is to shower... only to scream and be judgmental. but hey, at least the token minority character in the game looks like a hipster in black face.
no story is better than a crap one. and with alegory so vapid that, as someone who has REAL depresson, i'm ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ disgusted and offended.
that's what you defend? this is the hill you are going to cry on?
it's TOXIC AND PANDERING trash.
just as bad as life is strange ... where the main charactert blames everyone else for their own bs in an unlikeable, disgusting way... to the point of being less believeable than a cartoon character. those people are textbook toxic and not in an informative way.
MARIO has more character and soul than that. and possibly more soul than you.
if you believe anything about that, then you have to try on more games. maybe read a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ book.
I watched a few of huggbees streams and you know what? I kinda agree about the characters being unlikable if you can't relate to them.
However to say the game is just a derivative of super meatboy and should not be bought when comparing them? Nah... I tried super meatboy too, got like 4 hours on it, I cleared around 3 worlds but honestly I don't feel like going back to it just yet. In celeste tho, I finished every single stage available and keep coming back just to redo the stages and watch my time and deaths get lower. I have 100 hours in celeste already, I think it will be my most played game on steam soon.
Just because the gameplay is a derivative of something does not immediately mean it is inferior. If thats the case we should never buy any 2d platformer before buying mario, megaman, contra, etc.
It is all about the execution. Madeline in celeste is way more fun to control than any of the super meat boy characters I unlocked so far. In meat boy the faster characters are too slippery and the non slippery characters are too slow and boring. Theres just 2 actions in there run and jump while celeste has 3 actions dash, jump and grab. That might not mean much but it gives so much depth to every stage. There are so many different ways a single stage can be completed in celeste meanwhile in meat boy its just run, jump and avoid obstacles to reach the end. Of course if we unlock different characters we can find new ways to solve a stage but then the stuff required to unlock them just feel tedious. In celeste theres no seperate power ups to unlock, everything except the variant mode is unlocked from the start and you can use any techniques taught in the later stages right from the start. Super meat boy is a great game too don't get me wrong but its just not as fun for me.
Celeste also has a really polished code to make sure that the player never feels it too unfair or as if the game is at fault for not registering the controls. Watch this video if you want to know what I mean:

Should the plot be considered when judging a game despite it being skippable? Of course. Should it be the ONLY factor that decides whether a game should be purchased? Nope.
but that's the irony. why do people have to justify buying this product for any other reason than they like it?
and even then no work is perfect. if we can't be critical or see the flaws in things we like and love... then are we really thinking and enjoying them?
fair. thank you for your input.
celeste just seemed to play it way too safe .. .then again so did super meat boy.
I'll refrain from sinking down to your level and wont call you an illiterate dimwit who told evilboy to go read some books mere moments after having JUST praised the complex story of SMB to great lengths.
Talk about hypocrisy.
That aside, you asked me in your first response if I ever asked myself why the game uses pixel art.
Now I thought this was obvious but I'll answer your question regardless since you didn't manage to figure it out yourself.
You see... it's pretty common to use pixel art for high precision platformers like this. Sometimes pixel alignment is actually needed and it usually also makes it more fair when it comes to hitboxes.
I don't need your forgivness but even so, I'm very confused by that statement when all I did was stating a fact. Did I praise Celeste's story? Not even remotely, I mere acknowledged it's existance. Are you by any chance illiterate or do you just like putting words in my mouth to support your own narrative? (not trying to be rude, this is a genuine question)
I'm pretty sure she did it for herself, meeting Theo was a coincidence.
You're quite possibly the first person I've ever seen say that. If you think Celeste's colors is an assault to your eyes then there's probably not something wrong with the game but rather you.
Which part of the game made you vomit all over your keyboard? Does this happen in other games too, cause Celeste is not unique in terms of artstyle nor did it invent any new colours never seen before.
subjective
Again... subjective and also very vague, which mario game are we talking about?
Wait who said this person was perfect again? Cause I don't think I saw anyone in this thread, nor in most reviews I've read.
Citation needed.
However what we DO know is that Celeste has over 14k positive reviews on Steam and it sold over 500k copies. Citation? There you go https://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2018/12/23/celeste-sales-new-levels-announced/ :)
and that was before chapter 9 was released.
You see, unlike you I don't make baseless assumptions about other people nor do I manufacture my own facts.
well this all reads like youre' slighted. and even then. positive reviews? everybody can like like a politician. doesn't make that politician good.
i get you like the game but i wonder WHY you seem so invested in defending something that isn't all that ground breaking.
Is it really THAT hard to grasp that people defend the games they like? You know, like you have been doing this entire time? Look, there is nothing wrong with liking or disliking a video game, no matter how stupid the reasons might be.
I, for one, like Celeste for its mix of solid platforming, appealing visuals, great soundtrack and heartwarming story.
That's it.
Do I need to write a scientific journal about WHY I like these aspects? Or can we just leave it at... oh I don't know... everyone has their own SUBJECTIVE opinion about what they like and don't like?
From what you have written in your posts so far, I think it's safe to say that you dislike Celeste. And that's fine. Like I said, it's subjective. But instead of going on and on about how the game is a "clone" or simply BAD, how about you simply state why you dislike the game, accept that others might disagree and then move on with your life.
Quick sidenote, it seems as though you don't even own the game (at least not on steam). Yet still you have such strong opinions on it. Care to elaborate?
