Controls
I just got the game and the controls are definitely the most difficult part of the game. I'm getting better but I still mess up and press the wrong keys all the time. Is this normal in playthroughs?

I'm sure that many people used a controler, getting all eight directions down sounds difficult on a keyboard.
I use a controller, and I get the wrong button input all the time. Must account for 70-80% of my deaths. I mean to press up and Madeline goes diagonal instead, lol. I'm also using the D-Pad, not the analog stick.

I posted a screenshot of the resulting death count of my first attempt at chapter 2 B side on my profile. Hint: the number is high, lol. I don't care what anyone says about how badly I play despite using a controller. I'm working my way through 6B now, and I think that's good enough for me. HA!
No problems with the controls here, sometimes the brain has a minor brainfart and plans the wrong inputs for the dash, especially in sections with different types of dash jumps being required (like forward AND forward+up), but eh, it happens.

Just using keyboard here, mechanically it's nearly flawless, except that damn keyboard 'ghosting' issue where using too many certain buttons at the same time makes others not respond (like for some reason my laptop won't let me jump (Z) while moving and holding Wall-Grab (C)).

I've simply set my bindings to Z/X/C (Jump/Dash/Grab) + arrow keys (and AXC for the laptop to bypass 'ghosting'). Works like a charm so far.
If the controls are too inconvenient, change em to something that's comfortable to you, that's what i do for every game, the keyboard never failed me so far! The same advice will probably work for a controller too if you can rebind it (not all games let you do that with controllers, unfortunately).

For someone who got the game on Pc it definitely takes some time to get used to the controls. I think I got used to them around chapter 4. Practice makes perfect though.
Highly recommend using a controller for this game - Keyboard isn't out of the question for but I feel for most platformers, controller is the way to go.
It's perfectly playable on keyboard. Like stated above controllers have issues with the whole diagonal thing. While keyboard have an inferior feather (tool for later) control.
I found a setup in the discussions that actually worked for me.

Arrow keys.
A = Jump
S = Dash
Space = grab.

It took me second to stop confusing Space for jump, but other than that very useful.
If you use a controller don't use a xbox 360 controller with d-pad, buy another controller where the d-pad consists of four distinct directions (like Nintendo's d-pads) instead of being one big round button.
If your using analog like I am, sometimes holding the controller differently can be a big help. Try holding it facing you and in front kinda.
Oh yeah. The first time I played the game I kept getting the three non-directional buttons mixed up and had to say the correct order to press them out loud in order to be able to remember the sequence. It gets easier though, especially if you're playing on keyboard and rebind one of the three buttons to spacebar.
Only problems I had throughout the game were me accidentally dashing in the wrong direction because I used the left stick to move and depending on how I was holding my controller it was pretty easy to accidentally go diagonally instead of straight or vice-versa.

Probably should've used the d-pad instead lmao
PRO TIP: bind ONE key to both UP and JUMP.

Many platformers use up for jump also, such as Dead Cells. Celeste can do it too.

I use:

WASD - up left down right
L Shift - dash (most FPS use Shift for sprint/dash so it's easy to remember)
R Ctrl - grab (any key that you are comfortable with would suffice, really)
Up - jump (many action games use space for jump, but for platformers, it's more instinctive to use up for jump)

Dash and directional keys are often used together, so it's best if their keys are close together.

Dash and grab often can't be used together, it's best if their keys are far apart.

But the key is to use one key for up and jump. I guarantee that will make it easier for those who are struggling.

Of course, you still have to practice to get that muscle memory. But fewer keys means less muscle memory to remember.

20+ years ago when I used WASD for the first time, I struggled mightily because I didn't have that muscle memory! Ask anyone who has never played a PC game before and they will struggle with WASD too. Same situation with these PC platforming controls. Practice makes perfect.

Has the game disappeared from the face of the Earth? Has people stopped reading this forum or playing this game? As long as that hasn't changed, I can still post. What difference does it make whether I post on a new or old thread as long as my post is still RELEVANT?

it gets very annoying when people just start replying to posts made over 3 years ago. which tends to happen in bursts sometimes(?). its also a steam rule for some reason, and its frowned upon culturally. it doesn't really cause problems, but when someone tells you that nobody cares, it then does cause problems to start screaming about it.

as it stands right now we've already broken 3 rules. so how about we not bother yelling at each other over the internet, when we could be doing literally anything else with our lives, productive or not.
