Also, if you let go of the movement buttons, you slow down the feather. I didn't have to use this to get around, though.
You don't have to slow down, even if you did, you won't make it. The distance is stretched nearly to the limit. You do it perfectly, you have a good amount of room, but if you're wasting time, you won't make it far enough.
As SunTrooper says, try and turn a little earlier. if you have to go right and up, push right then up and to the left.
