Enabling this should make the game work with PS4 controllers when running from Steam (although the UI will still show xbox controls).
An alternative is to use the "opengl" branch which uses SDL2, which supports a much wider variety of controllers.
0. Make sure controller isn't paired to another device. (RESET THE PS4 CONTROLLER)
1. sudo rm -R /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
2. Restart
3a. With BT PrefPane open, try pairing with PS Button and Share. May or may not work. If it does, you're done!
3b. If 3a doesn't work, try connecting by pressing PS button and looking to see if light stays lit.
4. If still not working, start at step 2, and possibly try only 3b.
controllers are subjective. after building an arcade stick with a korean lever and playing over 100 hours of tekken with it, its my go to for clasic styled arcade games.
i play all my sidescrolling platforming adventures on my arcade stick. so comfy.
you will be best on what contoller you are most familar with. weather it be a ps4 controller, mechanical keyboard, some varient of a retro controller or whatever else.
I used the Steam controller configuration to bind triangle to up+dash together, this saves you from having to do the slightly awkward diagonal input. You might consider this cheating.
