It's a different game, criticize it if you want but not for being its own thing. You don't need to do it either
You can complete it in 10 minutes if you have done it before. It took me 20 minutes since I thought the strawberries counted for something. I really did not enjoy it.
The Pico8 is just a major drag when compared to everything you experience getting there. I'm sure some will appreciate it, I never said my opinion was absolute.
Pico8 is the same kind of thing, it's a hidden nostalgia lump that has little to no impact on the rest of the game, just like the strawberries; it's there for the people that want a challenge / a nostalgia trip. 100% optional. the only problem I can think of is that it's easy to sunk-cost your way into trying 'till you hate it out of a desire to keep progress, which is a bit sad.
You having a bad day? Your post is incredibly negative, so I'm sorry if you're offended that I don't think your video game is perfect.
Metroid ZM may have included the original version, but it actually was not required to play. The Pico8 does have an achievement attached to it, and thus does require you to finish it (if you want to play for those things). Then again, everything is 100% optional. Playing the game at all is optional.
Regardless, if you cared to read my post, you would have seen that I mentioned that Zero Mission included the original game, but they remastered it, thus making it seamlessly part of the experience. The Pico8 portion is in the main game, and it does not say anywhere that it is optional, it may have been a requirement to get a key for all I knew, given the nature of how the levels encourage exploration.
Your last sentence there is incredibly clunky, care to try again?
There are so many things wrong with your response but my god...
If I had the choice I would've made it unlock in the main menu after you beat 7A or maybe 8A, to show how far Celeste as a whole has come after the player has seen most of what it's going to offer and to avoid sidetracking the player without them knowing they were going to be sidetracked. I wouldn't unlock it earlier because then the player is strongly inclined to believe that they'll have the ability to dash twice before it's properly revealed to them, because already having been exposed to that made the first part of 7A seem oddly trivial and boring, which makes me feel like I missed my only opportunity to properly experience learning to work with Badeline (i.e. a second dash) in retrospect.
I'd also appreciate if something - maybe a postcard like the one shown after 8B - made it clearer that Celeste Classic was a demo of the full game made in 2015 to show off a concept, because I didn't know that when I first played it (and I definitely don't appear to be the only one that didn't know at first, either).
Even as a first time player it was pretty easy to realize the PICO-8 was an Easter egg that allows you to play an early prototype or demo of Celeste. I played it for around 40 minutes and decided I would come back to it later (little did I know I was on the last screen before summit ( -.- ). It wasn't confusing or sidetracking, though. I had no problem remembering what I was doing in the main game when I quit. Mr. Oshido is such a humorous lovable character, it would be hard to forget that you are in a giant resort helping a ghost clean up laundry, no matter how much time you spent on Celeste Classic. I also think spelling out the Easter egg with a postcard would ruin the fun.
I really don't understand the hate. Its just a fun little gimmick. If you aren't worried about achievements you don't have to do it. If you are an achievement person, I'm sure you've had to do way worse than Celeste Classic for an achievement before.
The fact that you suffered for 40 minutes then quit before finishing it should say something. I was just a bit more stubborn and didn't give up.
I agree it's a gimmick, I disagree that it's fun.
If you are worried about achievements, then you DO have to do it.
Whether or not doing "way worse than celeste classic" does not make it right to me. What that statement also implies is that "celeste classic is bad"... which was my point.
I'm done responding to this thread, I think I made my point, people take this as an attack on the whole game, when really I just had a major gripe with the way this part was introduced.
The rest of the game has some phenomenal level design, and some really interesting mechanics.
Since I criticized it, I'll give my take on what I would've done as a designer to improve it.
You find the Pico-8 machine hidden in the level. That's fine. It unlocks a message: "Pico-8 classic now available at main menu", then move on.
If you want to play classic, it's clearly separated from the main game and doesn't interrupt the generally well done pacing of the rest of the game.
