Completing the checklist does 'unleash the cryptid'. The cat clock now has text written all around it on the ground, truck, and 'curb', seemingly from the 'cryptid' thanking you for releasing it. and there are now paw-prints leading away from that area and through the middle of three ((free-standing) marked doors that spawn over by the wall with the tvs.
These doors are marked 'boneworks' (graphic of skull over wide 'X' shape with text 'keep out!'), 'deadfm' (graphic of a radio tower with text '98.6 kccw'), and 'machine king' (graphic of a stylized on/off symbol where the intersecting line is a cross shape). The middle is open.
There also spawns two posters for 'OMENS VR', which seems to be an in-universe product from a forthcoming project (seems to be what the 'vr zombies' from the boneworks demo were wearing).

So this might mean that OP was just trying the wrong thing in the dream, and it's not the sleeping kid but the little dancing dog that also works there. I've tried touching the book to the dancing dog in the showcase scene and it did sparkle but I couldn't get it to do anything.
So far in this mode I've found;
One little message from the developers which seems like a genuine easter egg, congratulating you for paying attention to details in VR.
An unused teleport-point, never normally visible, behind the near wall in the presentation room / patio doors in the show-floor room.
On one playthrough (but not repeated, yet), there were some weird barely-visible red objects visible in the distance. https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/961974825781452250/D604FA6B24DDFCCE47AEBCF8DB33AC7C3B97E4CF/ I suspect they're probably shotgun shells, but I don't know why exactly they'd be stored out there (as opposed to just deactivated), or arranged in pairs (as they seem to be, it's more apparent in the HMD).
You can take the framed photos in hand and examine them in detail. The photos are actually separate objects from the frame, and there's some other image(s) hidden behind them (part of the frames texture). No idea how to progress with that (getting any clear look at them).
All of the books which are (afaik) otherwise always static objects are grabbable physics objects in this scene. 'Eleven' is the name of the author of the wormhole book.
edit: wow, I should really learn to refresh pages that have been open a while before replying. had no idea ProMacGyver had replied.
Yeah that was my gut feeling. Honestly I don't know how any player could reach any certainty about anything in this game, with how meta it is, and how ambiguous the 'canon' is (if it exists at all). I can equally see the entire game being a psychic battle between 'problem child' David and cursed game/cartridge (for control of his body? implication being David stabbed Mom while possessed) as I could see it being time loop ♥♥♥♥ (Dog is future David), as I could see it being literally the video rental clerk who happens to be a serial killer.
Ha, ain't that always the case with them? I've rewatched it now, though, and I can't really guess what you might mean. 'escaped the game'?
Ah! So that is a real thing, and not a joke. I meant to go back and try looking through the desktop to mirror to see if that wasn't what this 'hint' was pointing to.
How is Duck Season going to work as a flat game?
As for Duck Season PC it plays like a PC game, I don’t know what more to say... It's still fun still have all the same secrets to discover, maybe more. However going between the two you can appreciate the VR version way more because you feel like your in the world vs seeing into the world. Otherwise it's the same game with some minor changes. We wanted to let others who don't have VR to play Duck Season now to be able to experience the secrets on their own. That way we are not leaving out a lot of people. We had to spend a lot of time converting the game to PC as it was not made for non VR. I hope everyone can enjoy it when we release it.
Anyone know how to use that supposed 'jump to menu' OP mentions?
Is there a way you can PM me? I might be able to help you
Why would the dad be dressed up as a character from a game? It is heavily implied that once the game is obtained, the dog attacks, which is reinforced by the exit door in the game.
However, this is of course assuming what we see in the game is real. It's quite possible, for instance, the kid has a mental disorder, and was the one that killed his mother, and when he defeats the dog, he defeats his inner demon. Given the dream with the disco dog, and the fact that the game only turns sinister after the boy hears reports of murders of families, if it wasn't for the fact that it's a sort of cheap theory, I would suspect the kid has schizophrenia.
It's important to note the boy is often sleeping when the crazy stuff is going on. We don't see him sleeping when he is killed, but that doesn't mean he isn't. Thus I now think what we are seeing with the dog in reality are likely to be dreams.
Let’s just reassure you and reiterated, because I am sure Brandon or Alex mentioned this before. The cartridge is cursed, the "Cryptid" or "demon" is real.
As for the videotape the direction the dog was given when filming the "its me" tape was "Point at the camera... Make a hugging gesture... Then signal come with me and walk off screen at the same time" The hugging gesture was over exaggerated because a normal hug didn't portray well in the tape. Since we only did a few takes we didn’t really see this might be an issue until after filming. It was then that we had a tough choice and we mostly didn’t want to film again so we used the misinterpreted baby cary hug take because it most portrayed the “Let’s be friends” feeling.
Hope that helps, Happy Hunting!
Can confirm. Those are shotgun shells. For some reason the expo scene doesn't respawn shells in the box as per the normal shooting scenes, and instead picks a seemingly random out of bounds area for them to respawn. If you had navigated to the shooting position (which doesn't actually work) you'd have seen that grabbing a shell would make one of those in the distance fly into your hand. When I did it, they ended up in the intro room.
Side note, it's strange that the shotgun is unusable when you're big in the expo scene. At lest it didn't work for me. It had a spent shell in the chamber, and four loaded, but wouldn't let me pump to get a new shell. Also after navigating around for a bit, I got locked into the shooting position, and couldn't escape except via menu.
Poking around at other things, someone had mentioned being able to get a better look at the pictures around the room if you get to the big screen TV version. Most of the pictures are pretty mundane, but the one of the family having just bought their house? One, the realestate company is called Amityville. More interestingly though, there's a dog silhouette in the second floor window.
UPDATE: Other random thoughts: I don't think the missing dad is super relevant. Originally, I assumed that the dad wen missing when they moved into the house because he found the portal and became trapped. Having gone missing, the mom assumes he left her and David and is trying piece her life back together. The maligned mom magazines might be because she's being bad mouthed by neighbors and such because they think her husband left her do to being a bad mother/wife. The reason she's the victim is because he's a baseball player and a bit of a celebrity. On another thought, perhaps his disappearance is irrelevant. It's only one day/night the game shows. Maybe he's on the road playing a ball game.
