career mode - unlocks?

when playing in career mode, do the other veichles a equipment unlock only when you change maps or can we play just the one map and slowly have the other items become available?
i know we can play free mode and have it all unlocked right away but as im playing with my son he feels its a bit overwhelming to get it all offered right away

Haven’t played in a while but I remember it’s all about having money to spend

Also haven't played in a while but I'm pretty sure you get money to spend at the end and can buy vehicles with it for the next map. Unless they've changed it.
