So yes you can play matches with less than 4 persons.
Basically this. Game is a good challenge till you git gud and/or play with high level people and get carried.
EDIT: Should I get the complete package? Is it balanced?
In terms of balance at the time of writing the base monster is considered the strongest (till next balance updates probably), the DLC one is ok, he gets weaker against high levels but is a nightmare for new players as he can teleport people away from their group.
The 2 investigators, well, are really specialised: they are not considered the best but hac-ve advantages of their own.
One is ok, the second is considered a bit weak because of his positive passive not impactful enough, but probably gonna be changed very soon.
The idol is ok, some consider it useless as there is an "alternative", some consider it powerful, matter of taste.
The flashlights are ok, there is one which is considered the best, but it is only a light variation from the base one, so no much difference...
The dlc are not really important, you can just take the monster or the investigator pack, but it is a nice way to support the devs. I think you get a reduction over taking them one by one as well.
DLC Idol is good, but there's a variation of it that's in the game already.
DLC monster has a weird playstyle that can actually end up winning games for the investigators if he's played improperly, but if played well is difficult to work around unless you play characters specifically designed to counter him.
DLC flashlights are all really strong in the current meta, the Metal Flashlight especially is considered the best long range light in the game, so that's probably the only real flashlight which will give you a slight advantage over people who didn't buy the DLC.
DLC investigators are a mixed bag. They both take skill to play, although one of them is super weak.
In other words, if something is "underpowered" now, there is a very good chance you'll see a buff for them within the upcoming weeks. Inversely for overpowered stuff. The state of the game changes pretty often! Keeps me coming back again and again!
Personally, I would recommend that you have the extra cash, go for it. This game is worth every penny you'll pay (and them some). If not, go ahead and buy the main game. If you fall in love... you can spend, what is it, $3? for all the extra DLC? It's pretty freaking cheap and more of a kind gesture to Waagh. That's how I see it, at least.
Anyway yeah, definitely worth the money. I'll be recommending it to my friends.
