Clarification on Stats

I feel like I might have missed something but I can't definitely tell what the stats actually improve. Defence seems straightforward enough, but resistance to me could be anything from resisting stuns and CC to merely reducing magic damage. What about Spirit and Magic Power? I couldn't begin to tell you the difference in what they affected. Magic power seems obvious but spirit is anything but.

Anyways, I'd appreciate some clarification on what stats do. All that being said, I'm really enjoying the game so far.
