Quest for Glory Collection

Quest for Glory Collection

QFG1 Finished game, but it won't let me save my character.
For some reason, when I finish QFG1 on the QFG collection here on Steam, it won't let me save the character at the end. It gives the option to do it, as it always has on every version of this I've played for 30 years, but it won't actually save it. It says it can't save it. If i try to change the name of the .sav file, it still doesn't work. I played the end three times and none of the times, would it let me save.

Something, i just thought of... I used the "razzle dazzle root beer" debug commands to increase all my stats to 500. lol. Could the problem be that it can't save a character with such high stats? If I reduce them to 100, the stat cap for QFG1, might it work?

I tried lowering them to 100 and it still says it can't create the file.

It's because QFG defaults to the "A" drive, which the Steam release doesn't set in the DOSBox configuration.

Try typing "C:glory.sav" - that will put the save file in directory where the game files are.

Oh! good call!

Did that work? I'm having the same problem, and I tried that fix, but it still wouldn't save.

Ok, I got it to save on the c: (it doesn't like it when I try to make my own directory for some reason), and now I can't find the file. This is exactly why I wanted to save on a memory stick, but it doesn't like that, either. What gives? DOS was a lot more straightforward in the before-times.

It's because DOSBox creates an virtual environment. Steam *should* set your C:\ drive in DOS to the install directory of Quest for Glory 1.

"X:\Steam\steamapps\common\Quest for Glory Collection\QG1" where X is whatever drive you have it installed to.

If you want to save it to a memory stick, you'll need to add a line to the DOSBox command configuration file (which is probably also in that install directory). You'll find it here:

"X:\Steam\steamapps\common\Quest for Glory Collection\QG1\DOSBOX\dosboxQG1VGA_single.conf"

In that file, add this line -
"mount a X:\" - where X:\ is whatever letter drive you have assigned to your memory stick. This will assign that drive (or directory) to the A: drive, which the QFG games link to. You can also add a directory if you want to save it directly to a directory, which is sometimes more convenient for the modern systems. You'll need to add this line to every QFG game in the DOSBox directory.

This might sound like a lot of work, but once you do it on the first game, it'll take 10 seconds total to add it to each game after it. And after that, you'll never have to worry about it again (unless you uninstall).
