QFG 1 fighting mechanics
So, is there a distinct difference between slashing and stabbing? Or am I just wasting time deciding whether a slash or a stab would be more prudent in battle?

Stabbing is faster but deals less damage.
Slashing is slower but deals more damage.

In general, the difference isn't enough to matter, though.

thanks for that. Guess I'll stab from here on out.

Actually there's a fairly big diifference. If you have a good weapon use skill level. At lower levels you're better off with stabbing since your chance to hit is fairly low. As your weapon use skill, strength and agility rise you will get faster at both and more importantly a good chance to hit. WIth a high chance to hit, slashing becomes vastly superior.

It's important to not that while a stab is faster it does less damage, Both stabs and slashes consume the same stamina however.

It is a moot point for fighter. At STR = 100 and WS = 100 you kill everything at the same number of hits.

I've always found that it's not really worth the risk of getting hit by trying to slash since it takes longer to do.

Yeah, pretty much this.

Worth noting that in the EGA version of Quest for Glory 1, you *only* have the Thrust move. The Slash move was added to round out the combat system a bit more (and to make the transition to the second game's combat system a bit smoother.)

That being said, I think Thrust is more stamina efficient, while Slash might be more likely to improve your Strength per swing. I am just guessing however. I think Thrusting is still the best option for training, either way.

Once you get your weapon skill high enough to the point where you can hit your enemy consistently, you'll find that the enemy's flinch animation is long enough for both thrust and slash to connect again before the enemy has a chance to attack back.

Thrust and Slash both cost 1 SP. They both inflict the same amount of damage and... Well, at least for fighter - has the same reach. But I found that Goblins and Brigands block thrust more often.
