Do not play "as is".. download ScumVM and play the games in that
For the games that are supported I strongly recommed you play them in ScumVM and not the DosBox installs like they come with by default.

Get ScumVM
https://www.scummvm.org/

Just click add game and browse to where you have them installed usually
\steam\steamapps\common

Then you can set the video GFX to the scale you like or to full screen and make sure you ste audio to "MS GS WaveTable Synth" to get the awesome old school midi sound.

The games play fine on DOSBox.

Changing the audio settings is as easy as dragging a game's INSTALL.EXE over any DOSBox executable.

Not really, no. It's not really any better or worse than DOSBox.

Additionally, you don't want to use Microsoft WaveTable Synth. It is not oldschool. It is terrible.

Use Adlib Emulator if you want the actual old school feel.

Wavetable Synth/General Midi just sound wrong.

wrong on both counts.

No, not really. I've played QFG on both ScummVM and DOSBox and the experiences are fairly similar. ScummVM eliminates a few glitches, then turns around and introduces a few glitches - and the experience is fairly identical, otherwise.

I will say that the import/export system is actually fairly intriguing in scummVM, but without support for Quest for Glory 4, it feels cut short.

I won't tell people not to use ScummVM, mind you, just that DOSBox is quite good.

As far as the music goes... no. Just no. Adlib Emulator and PC98 are the closest to recreating the Soundblaster experience - the definitive old school music. It's either Soundblaster, Roland MT-32, or go home. Anything else is inferior - and to be honest, I'd rank Wavetable Synth below PC Speaker in terms of "how much I'd rather listen to it".

Generally when people say things like "that was a waste of words", they generally mean "Man I can't believe I wasted words on this fruitless endeavor".

Just a tip for the future, not that you'll listen to anything I have to say.

I like how you kept saying Wiz was wrong but never bothered to clarify how, yet Wiz brought an educational perspective on how your statements about ScumVM are incorrect/misleading.

It's almost like you'll add an empty reply because people like you can not help it. Teehee.

It is a personal preference thing. There is no "better" way in a technical way. Both DosBox and ScumVM play the game emulation perfect. The difference is that ScumVM is a much better system imo for playing games. It is more responsive, has a awesome UI so no need to screw around with .cong files and it has built in patch libraries and sound systems that you need to set up in dosbox. It is simply a better user experience in every conceivable way, including native and very well done support for phones and pads (instead of the dosbox hacks that are around).

Try it... you'll never go back to dosbox.

Actually, I've been playing through again on the latest stable version of ScummVM, and I notice quite a few issues with QFG1VGA.

Namely, pathfinding glitches occur with more frequency, leading to the hero reaching the edge of a screen, temporarily walking off in a different direction, before going back (often clipping through the trees in the meantime)

And at one point, it actually resulted in the game getting soft-locked - especially in the Brigand's Maze when I tried to make the hero walk off the right side of the screen.

No, this doesn't usually happen at all in DOSBox. Pathfinding glitches tend to happen once every... five playthroughs, maybe? And the only soft lock is when you're sneaking and about to enter the baron's hall (which is an inherent glitch in the game). In ScummVM, it's happened at least seven times, not including the soft lock in the Brigand's Maze (which happened while I was just walking)
