Someone explain how combat works in the 1st game?
Hi,

In the QfG1, I wandered out of the town and to the bottom and to the right. Sometimes there are no dinosaurs but somethings there are and they kill me very quickly. I see a menu on the bottom right which I can switch to another (magic?) menu, and there are icons on all four corners of each menu. Not sure at all what they mean and how to fight, I was randomly clicking and I did a tiny bit of damage but I still died. Someone explain please.

At the beginning of the game, you will likely die a lot. That was part of the Quest for Glory plan for the first game - it was supposed to be like first-edition D&D.

This is my advice: the best ways to survive the first game are to start to learn the other parts of the game without combat. You can beat the whole thing while never going into combat.

But if you really want to go into combat and try it out, I suggest putting early points in Weapon Skill. That is the biggest factor in whether you can connect in combat. Second to that is Agility, which will also help with your Stamina points.

If you're playing the VGA version of the game, you'll need a lot of Stamina, because if you run out you die. It's a glitch, but it's one we live with.

Combat is mostly about timing and waiting for your enemy to attack and blocking/dodging them or slashing or stabbing to stop their attack. Or looking for an opening and waiting for them to put their guard down and exploiting it and attacking. For the combat interface at the bottom right here is what each one does:

Fighter
top left = slash
top right = stab
bottom left = block with shield
bottom right = dodge

Thief
top left = slash
top right = stab
bottom left = dodge
bottom right = dodge

Magic User
top left = buff your weapon causing your next weapon attack to do more damage
top right = fire ball (you need to find it and learn it first)
bottom left = stop combat and attempt to run away
bottom right = dazzle (blinding effect/stun)

Clicking the middle button switches between the melee abilities and magic/run away abilities. FYI when you are walking around and you see an enemy coming at you its possible to throw rocks, daggers or cast spells at them before they touch you and open up the combat screen.

The best way to get the hang of these games is to start with the fighter. He is way better at fighting starting out. With the magic user, you should get the zap spell to power up your dagger. Also, maybe run away from everything except goblins when beginning. Goblins and sauruses are the weakest monsters in the first game. Then comes brigands. After those 3 are centaurs, trolls, and saurus rex (those 3 are only out at night until you reach 1000 exp). There are three other monsters you have to fight (and I do mean it's mandatory with those 3) that are at the level of those last 3, but i'll keep them a secret. Also, if you have a number pad on your keyboard, it might be much easier using that instead of your mouse. You use 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 for combat. Happy adventuring!

timing, if you are a fighter or thife, you can typically throw dagger at them and keep running, magic users do magic things. when you get close its all about timing. also sleep at reanas peace for full recarge of points, some free food
