We hope you are all enjoying your first weekend with Pro Jank Footy!

To make things even easier for you to enjoy with friends and strangers, we're very excited to share this online matchmaking patch release.

Patch Notes

Online Updates: For all you online enthusiasts, we have heard the desire for matchmaking and have an early version available now. We wanted to get this into your hands as soon as possible but please note that this is a newly developed feature that has had limited time for testing. So, if you encounter any issues, please let us know and we'll make sure to clean this up ASAP. Note: As a result of bringing this in quickly, we've had to temporarily disable private online matches. This will be reintroduced very soon.
Steamworks Online Support: Epic Online Services requirements have been disabled for online play in favour of Steamworks. We have plans for crossplay support in our roadmap, and Epic Online Services is a requirement for this. As a result, we may revisit this in the future.
No Players Left Bug: We've fixed a bug that would occur if you run out of powers after a goal is scored. This is now resolved and the game will now correctly end with a loss when your players are gone.
Music Fixes: A few fixes are in for music issues related to menus.
Remote Control Power Frequency: The Remote Control power up can no longer be collected from Meat Pies.
Additional Fixes: A few more small fixes for achievements, made it so you're not able to handball when very close to goal (it will alway be a kick, even with a button tap) and a season mode tooltip has been added.

For those of you looking forward to updates on console, we're sorry that those take a little bit longer but rest assured that they are on the way as soon as they are approved for release.

From someone in the US, this is fun, but confusing.

I could have really used a bit more of a tutorial on the gameplay. For example, I have no idea what the two other sides to the goal posts were for. When you kick it there, do you get points? I notice someone on the opposing team gets the ball after and can kick it to try and get it up the field. Also, had some weird slow down occur on steam deck. Regardless, I'm hanging on to this, it was interesting....

Hi everyone!

Thank you all endlessly for you support and feedback on day 1 of Pro Jank Footy's release. We've been busy accumulating all of your thoughts and bug reports to get the highest impact patch out to all of you today.

Patch Notes

Player Switching: By popular demand, there is now an option in the Settings menu to disable automatic player switching. Automatic player switching is now disabled by default, so for those of you that have gotten used to this, it may feel a little different the next time you play.
Player Switching Stickiness: We also identified a sleeper bug that was causing player switching to feel "sticky" and non-responsive at times. This has been corrected in this update.
Achievement Behaviour: We've seen a few reports of strange achievement behaviour by players. Many of these will be seen by those of you that played the the Pro Jank Footy Demo, as the game remembered all you accomplishments from then and will then award the corresponding achievements at seemingly strange times. In addition, we saw reports of AI earning achievements on behalf of the player. We have cleaned up a few on these instances.
Pausing During Pre-Game: We recognise that it can be annoying not being able to return to the main menu from the mode and team selection screens. We have implemented a hotfix that allows players to access a simiplifed menu so they can exit from this context. Unfortunately this does not have all menu options availble here right now due to constraints surrounding our player joining flow.
Player Switching with Bumpers: Due to some requests to be able to switch players with the L/R bumpers for parity with other popular arcade sports games, we have added this support.
Broden: Many of you started to grow tired of Broden's enchanting voice after time, especially in those moments he started to get a little bit repetitive. We have reduced the frequency of many power-related Broden lines by half. He'll also talk to us less during quarter time breaks. Sorry Broden.
Camera Patch: We received a bug report around camera behaviour and it becoming stuck. Although this wasn't something we were able to replicate, we have made some updates that shore up camera behaviour to better protect from issues like this occurring.
AI Difficulty: We hear you for those that are looking for more customisation in the challenge AI poses. This is definitely on our roadmap, but for now we have a dynamic difficulty system that evolves based on the state of the game. As an early improvement we can make to this behaviour, we have reduced the challenge that lower difficulties pose. In the future, you will all be able to better curate this from the Settings menu.

Our game begins as a classic retro sports game (think NBA Jam or NHL ‘94), where two 18-player teams seek openings to score goals at the end of the field. Things start getting weird when either team scores: the opposing team gets to choose a random power-up capable of altering each match - redefining the rules in Australian Rules Football.

UPDATE: There's online play now and it's fun. I think it still needs to be fleshed out more and there is jank (that isn't intentional), but it's worth updating my review to positive.

Original Review Below:

Take my negative review with a grain of salt. The underlying game is good (esp if you have friends to play with), is exactly as advertised, and works. But feature and QOL wise... as a full Steam release it feels a bit early access atm.

First, the single player content is sparse, but that would be fine if there was online matchmaking. But all you can do is play local or in self hosted lobbies with passwords. I think this is the kind of game that would blow up if you had the ability to play randoms. Especially since beating the cpu is only fun for so long.

Second, the crt filter is terrible. It starts being set on so it's clearly intended to be used, yet it just completely washes out the image. It's not retro it's just ugly. Thankfully you can shut it off but then it loses some of that retro vibe.

Third, a few QOL stuff. Would love to be able to see the controls and rules in the pause menu, not just the main menu, as it's not complicated but takes a bit to remember what is what exactly. It's weird how that isn't an option.

There's barely any settings to begin with. No resolution, borderless or windowed, brightness levels, button mapping, vsync, fps choices, etc. It's extreamly barebones. Clearly was just a quick port from the console version.

And the games are pretty long, I wish you could adjust the time of quarters, esp when playing season. Hell, I'd like more fine tune controlling of the rules in general. It's long games of either all jank or no jank.

I don't really get the reasoning behind the set button mappings. You have a lot of unused buttons, yet 4 offensive actions are relegated to two buttons based on a press or hold.

So the difference between a tackle and a bump, for instance, is too inconsistent. You'll end up doing one or the other since it's the difference between pushing the button and whatever the game considers holding it.

I also don't get why the switch character button on defense isn't just the pass button also, it does nothing on offense. Weird to make the pass button the same as the shoot button with a press or hold.

Lastly, the game seems to think I rarely ever want to switch to a character actually closest to the ball. Numerous times it's switched me to a character off screen instead of next to the ball or next to the opposing player with the ball. Not sure why that isn't prioritized.

Your NPC players as well will also constantly stop short before picking up a loose ball for some reason so you can't rely on that when you get moved to controlling a character in another zip code.

There are some other things but I'm still trying to figure out if they're intentional or not.

But overall, the underlying game is fun and I want the devs to succeed. It's a great combination of ridiculousness that also requires skill. While I am enjoying, it just doesn't seem quite fully cooked yet.

Was winning the game by 30 points and the other team got the next goal wins card and scored 200 points and won the game instantly 10/10

I can absolutley see the huge potential for this game. The Jank and the Aussie humour are spot on. As a proof of concept I can absolutely get behind the game. However, beyond maybe the first game of the season it is almost unplayable, and frustratingly so. The AI scales in mysterious ways and you get absolutely dominated without really understanding why. You cant see the opps powerups, or your power downs. The mash buttons mechanics for centre bounce make sense for PvP but PvE there needs to at least be an adaptive or opt in (old man wrist gang rise up). Difficulty options will be greartly appreciated by all.
Cant wait to see where this game goes, all the potential is here.

How does fend-off work? Instructions say it drains stamina, but the bar doesn't drain. Feels like it's on a 3sec timer. I appreciate your changes to centre bounce making it less about mash speed, but it's bloody hard. Lucky to get a press off before it changes. Maybe I'm just old and slow. The purity of Full Jank mode must be preserved, but it would be great to see saveable custom decks/rulesets (starting cards, banishes.) I really like the idea from Season that all teams have a signature 3-card deck -...

Great game but: - I can't work out the ball up mashing mechanics. Do I mash one button, two buttons Track & Field style, or dance-dance revolution the buttons? - Your own players run around like headless bin chickens. Sometimes they're smart and you can get a passage of handpasses - which is very satisfying, but other times they're off having a smoko - Speaking of which, automatic player selection needs work. Often times the opponent gets the ball and just runs it into goal because you can't switch fast ...
