The skirmishers are the units you are looking for. Essentially they come in the two flavors, those with short range rapid fire weapons and those with long range weapons like the hunter rifle or Withworths.

Those armed with long range weapons are usually referred to as sharpshooters or snipers.

Thank you!
Sharpshooters are harder to use, keep at range at flank if protected by other units. Or make a good size brigade with carbines to build firearms and efficiency and then switch to telescopic sights.

I normally rename my skirmishers so that they have a unit name that fits their purpose. In a chaotic battle this can help you make sure that you use each force of skirmishers effectively.

The problem with snipers is the sketchy LOS system, sometimes they will ignore their range advantage and go hug the 2000 enemy men :(((

What I hate is when my snipers are shooting at a unit and they withdraw behind thier lines, instead of shooting at another unit in their line of sight they decide to chase it and go head on into other brigades, I have lost 250 men in a matter of seconds beacuse of that... in small battles thats no problem, as you can control everything, but in large battles when you control 40+ brigades it hard to micromanage them.

It used to work to "fix" them in place, esp. in UG:G, but in UG:CW some of the good stuff got lost sadly.

In my opinion, in this game, skirmishers are useless. All you really need is a ton of infantry, a few cannons, and a few horses. Infantry is all you need and simply charge in. Win every map fairly easy. You'll lose a ton of men, but youll take objectives with ease, and in the end surroudn the enemy and completely wipe them out... completely! Very effective but costly...

Have you tried experimenting with Sharpshooters? Great units for dealing the extra damage you need or killing that artillery unit without risking too many men. They require practice, but can be very useful.

Sharpshooters on a flank have saved my arse many a time. Although i think that taking out arty is when they are at thier most usefull
