I have played this game a lot of times. What are some of your favorite battles and why?

Im currently playing the USA and just finished up "Throughfare Gap". That is one of my favorite battles. I love how you start on the defensive in good terrain and repulse the enemy attack and then go on the offensive. It is small, quick and a lot of fun.

My favorite Grand is Gettysburg -- as CSA and USA both. The historical significance... The layout of the maps, with so much space to use (except for Culp's Hill, of course, but that has its own appeal)... The 4 days of battle involved, in itself awesome but with so much opportunity to use rookie and vet bdes for different purposes... I also always try to make Pickett's Charge significant, whether to break it or make it succeed...

Chickamauga is a close 2nd.

Fav minor as CSA: Mansfield. Simply because of the endless time, as this allows so much flexibility with tactics...

USA minor favorite: Seven Pines. The urgency needed right away... The combination of loan/aux troops with a select group of our own bdes (I don't know why, but I really like that combo)... The layout of the map, with all that wide-open space to make use of...

So far I liked Shiloh, killed over 26,000 traitors, and captured another 2200 more (hung them on trees on the way to Richmond for treason, after being drawn and quartered of course). Gaines' Mill and Malvern Hill were nice too, killed over 16,000/17,000 rebel scum respectively. Overall, which ever battle let's me draw out the fight and rack up the traitor body count is great in my book. 34,059 American dead, 112,070 traitor trash killed so far in my campaign. Gotta improve those numbers!

And another thing about Mansfield: this is one of those historical battles that I knew nothing about until UGCW. Did a lot of digging online to learn about it, comparing maps to the UGCW map, really got into it otherwise. As part of the Western Theatre, it's of special interest, too, since this theatre doesn't get as much attention in the game...
I like the bull run battlefields. Lots of plains and fields, with occasional bits of cover.

I like Antietam the most (as CSA)... :) I have pretty good army by then (with some 24 pdr howitzers) and can kill Yankees to the last man (usually 50-60k killed)... Map is big and there's plenty of space to lure them into a trap...

I concour with everyone so far. I lenjoy all the battles except for "Salem Church" and "Manassas Depot". I don't like those two at all. I win them, but it is more like a chore to play them. Every other battle I like, some more then others like "Throughfare Gap". By the way, I enjoy playing both sides equaly well. Each side has its own advantages and disadvantages, that is what make playing either side really fun.

AD_79's point about having a pretty good army, and esp when there are enough 24-pdrs to make a difference, is a great one. When a deployed corps is fully set up and really ready to go for this or that battle, then it feels good. It IS good.

I still have particular favorites, as detailed above. I still like defensive battles more than offensive. But to know I've got the necessary force to accomplish the mission? Having every corps involved balanced properly? That's a favorite scenario, even if my in-battle moves and decision and such aren't ideal.(!)

BTW, Happy New Year to one & all.
