List of historical officers
List of historical officers I got for both sides. I just checked my last saves for each side so probably missing some I didn't recruit or may have died but I try to get as many historical guys as I can afford. I've seen some rank major or lower like Devin from Buford's brigade but I usually don't recruit lower than lt. colonel.

Good work, Ninjasq. I'll suggest Thomas Preston for the CSA becuase he was in fact part of the real CW and, for whatever reason, has been a "presence" in my last two CSA campaigns -- as an active corps commander who served well. I think also that he is one of the dopplegangered officers, available twice -- although not sure about that.

Thanks very much! I like getting the real officers too, and try to level them up ASAP & then promote them into corps/division slots.

Anyone knows if Col., later Gen., Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain ( US ) is ingame? I mean, on basis of the movies "Gods & Generals" and "Gettysburg" he's a bit popular and he is a historical person who played a major role at Gettysburg.

been looking for chamberlain after gettysburg but didn't find him. thought he might've been lt. colonel in the pool.

@D-Dub - I did get a Tom Preston

Also a Tom Preston in my CSA army. I'd thought he was a randomly-generated officer, but perhaps not. Guess I should look him up.

I noticed Chamberlain's absence too, and find it somewhat disappointing.

They give you Col. Strong Vincent (Chamberlain's bde commander at Gettysburg, who died there), but no Joshua Chamberlain - who became a MG shortly before Appomattox! That's strange indeed.
You forgot Joseph Johnston for CSA. Pretty sure he is in the game. If not, it would be a major omission.
I still wish they would replace one of the double John Gibbons with Philip Kearny.

Joseph Johnston is there.
In the list above, I see Albert Sidney Johnston, but not Joe. Sorry, not trying to be picky, just pointing it out.

Yup, I missed Joseph Johnston there, adding him.

I discovered that Col. Sanders Bruce, available in the Union Barracks, was a real person - an important brigade commander at Shiloh
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanders_D._Bruce

Apparently the developers hid some "easter eggs" in the Barracks - not just real generals, but at least this one colonel. I wonder if there are more real colonels, lt. colonels, and even majors hidden there.

Yes, there are historical officers all the way down to captain. Eli Lilly was a captain, he was available after Chickamauga. Adding Bruce.

Thanks, @Ninjasquirrel! This is getting more interesting as it goes; I'll be doing more wikipedia searches on lower-ranked officers.

This thread kinda demonstrates one of the things I really like about games like this. They may not teach very much directly; just a game after all. But they pique the interest and get one reading, web-searching, and discussing the historical period again (or perhaps for the first time).
