supplies
Is there any lasting benefit to capturing supplies? I understand they help during the current battle, plus you exchange the prisoners, I was just wondering if it has any other effect for other missions.

I have never watched, but maybe it increases your supply. Will have to watch this on the next campaign, i ussually set my supply to 24000 as soon as possible, but will set it to 23500 next time, and then see if after a battle where I captured supply this number goes up.

I've never seen captured supplies get added to your supply list, no.

It appears to me it just ends up being money if you do not use it. I think it is more of a tactical thing, where you steal it from the enemy, can use it, or just cash it in.

From what i understand, since your supplies auto refill after battle, any unused supplies in the supply wagons that you captured will be used to refill your supplies so the cost of those supplies that auto refilled is lower

After the battle, they're shown in the summary screen as captured, so they'd go into your resource pool in army management, same as captured/recovered weapons.

What I don't understand is why capturing enemy supply adds nothing to your supply in-camp, while having supply captured removes supply in-camp. If capturing adds nothing, surely losing should remove nothing. Weirder still, when my supplies are listed as rescued (end of battle), they still are lost in-camp!

Supplies equal cash on a 1:1 basis. Supplies you capture (and don’t use in the battle) go to your money pool. You can also add a captured supply wagon to your corps’s permanent supply train if you capture it before the last day of a multi-day battle and retreat your own wagon off the field.

Interesting. How do you know if you're in the last day of the battle?

You just gotta know - it’s most of the Grand Battles, except Fredericksburg and the Peninsula. It’s an exploit, but generally accepted

I was successful at adding a caisson, but I have two questions. 1. Is it possible to add more than one caisson from a battle? I captured two and retreated two of my own on the second day of Gettysburg, but I only got to keep one permanently. 2. Are permanently added caissons always attached to the first corps? When I captured those two, I retreated a caisson from two different corps (hoping to add a caisson to each), but the only one I got to keep was attached to my first corps.

I think you can only get one per battle phase, and I don’t know about more than 1 per corps. I got my first ones at Gettysburg, but on different days (1st Corps on day 1, 2nd Corps day 2).

Thanks for the help cromagnonman2k. It's cool that we can add caissons, even if it's a little tricky to do.

Is it really generally accepted? I hadn't heard that from anyone else. It seems like a HUGE exploit to me. Really, part of the fun in this game for me is capturing enemy supply, forcing them to run out of ammo, and using it against them.

It is seen more as a feature in the game, as the some battles, (mainly major battles and end game) run fairly long. Holding up to 70,000 supply is useful to ensure you have enough ammo for the entire battle. And more supply wagons allow for more brigades to be supplied at once. By the end battles, supporting 100,000+ men and numerous cannons, supply can become a problem for some. Thus, using 2 supply wagons is very helpful for ensuring normal firing until you can capture a supply point.

In the previous posts I’ve seen discussing this, it seemed the kind of exploit that all commentators agreed was not detrimental, but rather necessary for the late game. You still have to pay for the supplies in them.
