artillery status
How can you tell if artillery is unlimbered: What is the default at the beginning of a battle?

BUMP!
Is this question so hard to answer? I can see no changes in the icons for limber/unlimber.

There is a change in the icon? Look again.

Just clicking the Limber icon won't do anything. The cannons automatically limber if they have to move longer distances.

If the limber/unlimber order doesn't do anything meanibgful, why is it there?

Same reason the Mount and Dismount are there, faster movement speed. Although I think the real reason is to convey what mode it's in rather thatn function, because it's automatic.
