Leveling up your general
Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone had any tips on ways to level up your general. Is it based on how many kills your troops get or kill ratio? Does your general have to be around the fighting?

Thanks guys

The best way to level your general is to replace him as Corps commander. Give the spot to another general and give that general trainer +10% exp perk.

Put your general in charge of a brigade and he'll level faster that way.

Yes, as soon as you get a two star general, either through battlefield experience or as a reward, you should, aaaah, replace yourself as corps commander and put yourself in a brigade.
This of course also means that have the possibility of dying, which is quite interesting :). The war continues without you but who are you then, exactly? And who gets fired if you lose too many battles :)?

I'm not so sure you can die.

I had my general get over run in one battle and his unit disappeared. I figured that meant he was killed or captured like any other general unit. But lo & behold, in the Camp screen after the battle, there he was!

Thanks guys. Which levels up faster, a brigade commander or a division commander?

I feel like brigade commanders level up fastest but I could be wrong :p

My commander died early as a brigade commander. It hasn't seemed to effect the rest of the campaign so far so it isn't game over.

Yup, if you're killed as a brigade commander, you're gone from the army screen but still listed as General-in-chief. :-) I tried it a bit, seems like my guy gains a lot less experience than the same level commander in the next brigade. But I really enjoy the benefits of a 2 star corps commander.

by the time I'm at Fredericksburg my entire first core is full of 2stars while the Div commanders are barely into their one star. I had to rotate them around to get them all experienced as the brigade commanders get exp much faster than div commanders.

Put myself in charge of artillery. Usually safe job, except in my case since i like to keep my guns right behind my infantry. Whoever came up with canister shot deserves a medal.

How does the rank of division commander affect units? As far as i can tell, they don't get skills like corps commanders or units.

Division commanders increase the command level of all brigades in their division, improving efficiency and morale. Just look at what happens to the entire division's stats in the army management screen after a division commander is killed or wounded.

This thread made my day, because I arrived at exactly this point in my understanding of the game :)
I realized that it would be best to put myself in command of an artillery brigade, and wondered what happens when I die. Good to know that if I die in duty I still stay in overall command.

It will be an honor for me to move from the highest to almost the lowest level of command, I will now command a small battery of captured long range artillery, and I have one more brigade general at my disposal, great!!!

Don´t use the long range arty for this purpose. It simply does not rack up enough kills to get you the exp you need. If you´re using artillery unit as your exp grinder pick heavy howizers or at least napoleons in close support.

Yea, you want your arty as close to the fighting as possible.
