The Shiloh Hornets Nest Capture Point should be moved.
I am loving the game but this point is unfair. I spent 40 minutes trying to figure out how to rout two union brigades from the tree line. I got them to move after loading an eariler save but I shouldn't have to do that. I boxed them in with six brigades and kept trying to push them out. I rushed them, bombarded them with cannon and I also had 6 brigades fire point blank at the brigades. The capture point should be moved out of the tree line. I beat back the rest of the union army, and can’t move these two units because of defense bonuses. This makes capturing the point impossible.

I guess that's why they called it the hornets nest. If you ask me, it's okay as it is.

I ended up surrounding them and pounding them to dust.

It's fine. All you need is a large rested unit (preferably 2) with muskets (which have melee bonus) which will charge them, while other cover fire. Once into melee, send the cav in, and watch them crumble. Don't get into a shooting match with them, it's very much not in your favor.

Keep a general not far, so your chaging units do not rout.

dude, just dont bother attacking it. whether you take any of the objectives in the Shiloh Battle other than Pittsburg landing is ultimately inconsequential. The Union will still retreat to Pittsburgh landing whether you take the hornets nest objective or not. besides, the whole point of the hornets nest was that it was a very tough fight for the confederates that very nearly derailed the entire Confederate attack

You don't have to take the hornets nest. In fact, some believe the Confederate delay at the Hornets Nest was a contributing factor to the loss and that they should have just gone around it. If you do want to take it, bring all your arty up to canister range.

Partner, read a little history on the Hornet's Nest. What you're describing is literally what happened in real life. The Union defenders were dug in deep at the Hornet's Nest and held up the Confederate attackers until until the rest of the Union troops could regroup further north. It's not supposed to be easy, bruh.

I surrounded it and then ordered about half my army to charge in. Sheer numbers overwhelmed and won the day.

My boys got slaughtered at the Hornet's Nest. I thought I had enough men to move those Yankees from the tree line, but assault after assault my boys fell back broken. Terrible waste of life for a questionable point to capture.

What you need is your cannon close. Grapeshot them to death and charge.

Here is a tip.

Ignore the Hornet's Nest.

Go around it. When the timer runs out the Union will be forced to retreat into your men :)

Attack the Hornet's Nest. You can rout half of the Union army there and these troops are free. Once they've routed you can destroy their final positions with these free troops with ease. It really becomes a massacre if you decisively defeat them at the Hornet's Nest. Be aggressive in the church as well and try to defeat the enemy in detail. Massacre them at your will once they retreat. Aggressivenes is the key in this battle.

Like OPs post, half the posts complaining about battles being unwinnable are just laughable.

Go read what really happen. Hornet's Nest got it's name at the Battle of Shiloh for a reason. The Union brigades in there held out for hours against 60 cannons and being completely surrounded. Some historians attribute their bravery to the reason the Union had time to regroup and reform at Pittsburgh Landing.

The devs have repeatedly said not to expect to win every battle. The devs literally cannot win here. If they make it historically accurate, people complain about some battles being too difficult (Malvern Hill for CSA) and if they make battles easily winnable from both sides, they have to go against what happened historically (why even make the game at this point?).

Capturing the Hornet's Nest starts around 21.00 here if you're interested in watching an approach to it.
I would have liked to establish myself on both flanks of it and push through the center but sometimes you've gotta make due with what you can achieve.
