I ended up surrounding them and pounding them to dust.
Keep a general not far, so your chaging units do not rout.
Ignore the Hornet's Nest.
Go around it. When the timer runs out the Union will be forced to retreat into your men :)
Go read what really happen. Hornet's Nest got it's name at the Battle of Shiloh for a reason. The Union brigades in there held out for hours against 60 cannons and being completely surrounded. Some historians attribute their bravery to the reason the Union had time to regroup and reform at Pittsburgh Landing.
The devs have repeatedly said not to expect to win every battle. The devs literally cannot win here. If they make it historically accurate, people complain about some battles being too difficult (Malvern Hill for CSA) and if they make battles easily winnable from both sides, they have to go against what happened historically (why even make the game at this point?).
I would have liked to establish myself on both flanks of it and push through the center but sometimes you've gotta make due with what you can achieve.
