Yep....same here. Would love to play as prussia in europe or as the english in the colonies.
anyway, I DON'T want the AR or Nepoleonic wars because there are many dozens of games in existence. I want more unique, untreaded waters.
1: Napoleonic wars first or second coalition or maybe in 1813 after the Russian invasion
2: Franco-Prussian war of 1870
3: world war 1
4: 30 years war (religious wars)
5: Crimirian war
6: Civil war the western frontier
I think the last major conflicts UGG's model can handle would be the Franco-Prussian War or Russo-Japanese War--even that would be challenge, given that artillery fired so much faster and further than anything in the Civil War or Napoleonic Eras.
In reality, the engine is probably far better equipped to go backwards in time than forwards.
Crimean war, Austro-Prussian, and Franco-Prussian wars have hardly ever featured in any PC wargame as far as I know. The technology, tactics and time period of the civil war are also very similar to these conflicts, so should be easy to make such games.
However the engine can work just fine for earlier conflicts, I would love to see the campaigns of Marlborough, Frederick the Great, and Gustavus Adolphus recreated in the Ultimate General series.
But :), Napoleonic Wars should be next evolution of this game. It is logical, great year span, big and plenty of battles (no need for minor engagements). Like somebody said, who doesnt want to see French Dragoons and Hussars charging? And to chose between 5 campaigns for example: French, Britain, Russian, Prussian and Austrian.
Regarding WW1 it won't be good for this game engine. That is totally different tactics, long range artillery, no Line fighting, machineguns.
I see WWI mentioned, I actually think the engine would do quite well as a high-level tactical WWII game. Companies as maneuver units with the AI sorting them into platoons. Essentially Battalion level. There's some really interesting fighting in the Commonwealth sector of Normandy that would suit.
