capturing supply wagons

Is there any benefit to capturing supply wagons beyond whatever detriment it will have for the enemy? As far as I can tell it doesnt really give me any more supplies than I had already or make supplies cheaper or free to an extent

You can get supplies from captured wagon. I did that a lot.

Well you can use those supplies during the battle which is usefull. After the battle you get some recruits in exchange for the prisoners and i assume some money because every supply point is worth one dollar.

Rookie question... how do you capture? I think my only attempt resulted in my forces destroying the opposition supply wagon (if that's possible).

You need just came near that wagon. Use cavalry for that.

supply wagons are the juiciest targets on the battlefield, i always send my cav after them, 25k extra supplies from the union helps tremendously and hurts the enemy troops alot, and if you dont use up all your captured supplies you get it in the pool after the battle

Captured supplies is great. Feed them to your artillery. I tend to not bring enough supplies for my troops to battle since I know I can capture the enemy supplies and use for my troops. Also it provides you an additional supply unit to cover larger flanks since you only get 1 per corps.

Easiest way is to order the soldiers to charge it.
Or give a move order to somewhere behind the wagon.
