2nd Battle of Bull Run
I'm only outnumbered on this one by about 3000 but somehow i just can't seem to win. What makes it particularly difficult for me is the sheer massiveness of the field and that you basically have to control the entire area! You have to march clear to the other side of the field to capture the enemy flag and at the same time protect two of your own flags ( or at least one of them). I think this is the first major battle that is basically an offensive. I'm pretty sure all of the others were definsive so that adds even more to it's challenge.

Sounds like you are playing as Union?
Put as many troops as you can in your vanguard corps. Then you have two chances to overrun them and capture Stony Ridge before the AI starts coming in on your flank.
I do it here in the first wave:

Historically this was a very difficult battle for the Union and you may experience some of this. You are not saying much about your troop numbers so not sure how hard it is for you. If you feel it is too difficult, don't forget that you can choose to withdraw completely or not attack and defend the rear positions and try going for a drar.

My total strength, between both corps is only about 38,000. I think i only had about 10,000 in the vanguard so i'll definitely try doing it the way you've suggested, although i still don't know if it will be enough since it's still far less than what i see you have at your disposal. I'm now regretting not adding more career points to the "politics" attribute since this would have resulted in having more troops by now. I may just have to start the whole campaign over as much as i would hate to do that since many of these battles are rather difficult.

The real name is Second Battle of Manassas.

Naming of the battle goes to the winner. Usually the South called battles by town name and the North by streams/rivers.

Problem solved! I followed your advice and it worked perfectly. A lot easier when your starting force is three times the size it was before. I guess i didn't know you had as much control over which corps is put on which map. Thanks, man.

Attacking the left and over power them made this battle very easy IMHO won it 4 minutes into the second day of attack

Koro, you stacked your center, nicely done.

I stacked my right flank, wedged myself into their defenses up near the river and then rolled up their line like playdough. Didn't fight the second day.

Really though. In almost every battle that isn't purely defensive, the big question you should be asking yourself is "Where can I outflank my enemy?"

If you can stack a division onto the end of the enemy's line you will break the line.

Yes. Sadly, it is really the answer for 2nd Bull Run.

This man speaks the truth :).

I think perhaps the number of troops in the initial wave could be reduced for Bull Run and have the rest of the 1. corps come in as reinforcements.
istorically, the first onslaught was small and the attacks were uncoordinated. It would make for a more interesting battle rather than being able to bring all of it at once and simply overpowering the Confederates.

Well, the real names are two names. Use the one that you prefer. Both are correct.

Back to the game- i somehow managed to break the rebel left flank and that got me to the victory, but by god, no idea how i have done that. I like to imagine my Union boys were suprisingly brave an ferocious that day.

The victor hasn't always claimed naming rights. Second battle of bull run is more common.

The surrender of Vicksburg overshadowed whatever happened in southern Pennsylvania the first week of July 1863.
