just try a few more times and experiment heavily. You wont learn all you can from forums and advice as much as running the battle through. If you dont have time for this, its gonna be a short game for you.
The second part is hard if you take a lot of casualties in the first attack. But you should be OK if you did it like I said.
For the second part send the troops out of the fort and run to the forest, with a little luck you will beat the Union to them and will be able to shoot at them in the open from the forest. Send the calvary behind and attack the artillery and supply wagon. If the Union is already in the forest chose the best location (in cover - fields or house) and shoot at them and to keep them busy. They will try to charge, but if you position your troops so that they can cover eachother, they will be able to flank and route them every time.
For the defense, combine the brigade outside of the defenses and send out a skirmisher to the right flank of the Union attackers. When your cavalry arrives, I suggest sending them to hunt the enemy artillery, granted they aren't being actively protected by a Union regiment. Once that's finished, just let the enemy crash upon your defenses and you should be good for the most part.
Add Newport News to that...
So you have to intercept before they go to port. Detaching Skirmishers from your INF Brigade
Detached Skirmishers run to center and get in cover(forrest or House) to delaying, if you late than enemy, keep close to thier back so they turn, going backword, they turn, going forward(keep this untill your INF brigade make to deal with them)
Pushing Enemy Skirmishers with your INF Brigade, and dealing them with Cavaly charge
(You should not let Cavaly hit by 2 volly before charge)
if it done well, enemy force significally weakend.
now we are going to take port.
just waiting outside of port from enemy rifle and shell(not a solid) range, until your reinforcement
arrive at position,(you got plenty of time)
attacking port at least 3 side at same time, one of your brigade should charging port from north side to take their Arty.
when enemys arty are in melee, time to charge front side. charge one of your brigade,
whlie that brigade in melee, another INF brigade should be ready behind them,
when first wave routed, charge second wave.
(second wave condition have to be more than 90% and moral too, this make melee strong)
they will crushing front enemy brigade, not to melee another enemy. make them stand there and give volly to enemy to kill them all
-
phase 2
follow patriot asr's comment, and remember, One brigade must be positioned back of the front line brigade, when front line brigade get charged by enemy, second line can give devastating Volly to them.(Not too close, they can be in melee if too close)
