No More 'Rebel Yell'?
I went back and played Ultimate General Gettysburg today cuz I felt like it, but I could hear the Rebel Yell in it. Why was this removed from Civil War? It sounded GREAT and fit in well with all the other sounds in the game! Since the game is finishing its developement I guess it won't be added in the end, which is a crying shame if you ask me.

BTW, that utter genius who made "South Playable?" you have the second most popular discussion in here, HOW

They should add the Rebel Yell to CSA charges in UGCW. It would add a little historical flavor to the game. The Union charge scream should be a "Huzzahh sound.
I agree with this. Hell it would be cool if the Yanks had Huzzah! Huzzah! If the rebs failed a charge or had to withdraw from an engagement that would be a nice touch with the rebel yell. That would add some serious immersion

I'm not sure if the sound effect of men yelling as they charge is the "Rebel Yell." First, the Union brigades yell when they charge and I'm sure they really did during the Civil War. Moreover, there was no single "Rebel Yell" that was used throughout the Confederate armed forces. In fact, even single regiments had their own distinctive yell. You might be interested in checking out the link below. It's the only recording of Southern Civil War veterans doing renditions of their unit's "Rebel Yell."

Although I don't know where these men were from, they clearly don't have contemporary dialects you would see in the American south today. Kinda neat, huh?

Some music from the period would also be great. "Glory, glory", "Dixieland", "When Johnny comes marching home", "Bonnie BLue Flag" and so on. Make it background music for camp, during deployment fase, at victory/draw/defeat screen. A little spirit of those times...

Imagnie walking through a cornfield, hot and terrified as Minie balls whizz over your head and hit people in your ranks and then you hear THAT. Holy hell that must have been terrifying...

The rebel yell is always an interesting topic, as like the Telharmonium it has never been recorded.

Someone did a rebel yell sound effect for Take command Second Manassas, in which he overlayed 100s of yells. It was great, but I can't find it right now and it went with my last computer from ca 2005. It should still be there and I still have the computer.

Some samples at 2:30 or so that give some idea what it could have sounded like in battle

Another one. The problem is of course that these are just a few very old men, and it would have sounded a lot more impressive when they were younger and 1000s of them, as well as pumped up with adrenaline.

Anyway, at least it was realized by those men at the very last moment that it had to be recorded. So we know at least what the basic yell sounded like.
