Occupying a fence or fortification

Is there some trick to get your troops to align themselves behind say a fence or other fortification? most of the time my troops are half over , half under. I sometimes get a blue border and they fit perfectly but cannot find the method to do that consistently.

select the infantry unit. There should be a small white shield over top of the garrisonable cover. Otherwise it's just a drawing of a fence that gives no cover bonus.

You have to select just one brigade to see the shield , there are two kinds of shield one for infantry and one for gun .

Ah really? The random fences around dont provide cover unless you actually garrison? So then only woods, and the barn buildings can be used I guess.
