Chancellorsville... Holy Crap!
I just had my army wiped off the face of the earth. Union Campaign over.

Can any offensive action be taken in this battle?

I have played it through a couple of times. I just can't figure it out. Outnumbered. Outgunned.

I just don't have the manpower to put together any kind of offensive. Should this be played completely as a defensive battle?

We are out gunned...out manned...out numbered, out planned.

Historicly Chancellorsville was one of the CSA's finest battles, so if you're the Yanks think defense and saving your skin to fight another day.

You should only defend in the first three phase, until their encirclement is broken.

Yes and no. Lee bled his army of large amounts of men the South couldn't afford to lose, not to mention losing Jackson. Ewell and Hill never really filled his shoes.

The ultimate eventuality of Chancellorsville is that eventually the rebs will come steaming down your flank ready to make a platter of Yankee kebabs with their bayonets. Despite what the game tells you, defend.

Defend, slowly pull back and save your units, div them all up. Do not leave those guys alone on the hill at the bottom middle of the map in phase three i think? of the battle, they will get wiped. Back your divs up so when your men rout you have more to push into the front line.

Send skirms to wreck their arty later in the battle and then you can push, try and steal their supplies as well or at least push them out of reach. I ended up wiping the whole Confederate army at Chancellor - http://i.imgur.com/bSa3qRl.jpg that was my units chasing down their last supply wagon and a couple of wrecked brigades. The next phase of the battle had me facing only one arty unit, some supplies and one cav unit. This was Major General mode as well.

Robert Edward Lee, Thomas Jonathan Jackson, James Ewell Brown Stuart .... all died , Completely annihilated nothing remains .

This is a sad day for the south .

I wish casualties would make a difference between phases for me like it did in Hetstaines game. I'm also playing on Major General mode, I completely encircled and destroyed the Rebel army on day 3, there wasn't a single survivor. Day 4, I'm supposed to retake Orange plank road and Orange turnpike but now the CSA have resurrected 37,000+ soldiers and 110+ artillery pieces. Utterly infuriating.

What are you talking about? If you have fully eliminated CSA army on phase 3 (day 3 dawn to late morning), there won't be any meaningful resistance on phase 4 (day 3 late morning to afternoon)

If he has 37 000 rebz on the 4th day , It means that he only survived on the 3rd day .

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for all the thoughts. This game has definitely challenged by strategic thinking!

In the previous attempts I tried smaller offensive engagements, but it simply did not provide any benefit. I will stick with a completely defensive approach and see what happens. This is not typically how I like to fight battles, but I will have to rethink my strategy in this battle.

I let y'all know how it goes.

@Hetstaine, and any others who won Chancellorsville on Hard (Major General)...well done! Good job. I hope I can follow in your footsteps as it is the next Grand Battle for me on my own Major General campaign with the Union. Good job guys!

I didn't have a problem, although during his stoic defence of my right flank, Phil Sheridan died. That's my Chancellorsville revisionist 'loss of Jackson' moment.
