Yes
Do you want the game spoiled for you, or the anime spoiled for you?
Do you want to watch the story being told to you, or take an active part and live it?
I dissagree mostly with manga nuts saying the manga is always better. And in some part that's also true for Berserk, the first few chapters of the manga are very low quality and have aged pretty badly. However the story is great. It's the reverse for the later stretches, with absolutely GODLY quality drawings but the story got very poor the farther it went.
I prefer the anime over the manga when it comes to the golden arc tho. The manga aged badly for those chapters, and I felt I had more of a relationship with the characters.
so to end, start with the older anime and read the rest in the manga if you're still interested.
I came into the IP only a couple of years back. I watched the 90s anime first, then the GAM (golden age movies). Yes, the older anime has more content, but it's hard to watch by todays standards of animation. And while the old series did a few things better (more info, better Zodd introduction), the new movies did quite a few things better (visual quality, sound, not having Goku as every side character, etc).
Some people will defend their favorite ways to consume the IP quite viciously, but rose tinted glasses will do that. If you favor reading, the manga is the absolute difinitive source for Berserk. The artwork is absolutly gorgeous, and the writing is top notch as well. But not everyone wants to spend 100s of dollars on something to see if they like it, and not everyone wants to watch 4.3 animations that haven't stood the test of time (minus the static frames they use, they are works of art).
And as for the new, 2016, series. Hold off on watching that till you've watched the GAMs. It picks up after the Golden Age Arc. And although it does skip a few arcs from the mangas, it still makes sense to watch after the Golden Age series for continuity sake. Some people hate it because of the visuals, or that they skipped some arcs, but if you love the Golden Age movies, you'll probably love the new series. But be warned, the visuas take a few episodes to get into. Stick with it and you'll start to like them and see the story for what it is. Berserk.
:)
Also, the 97 show is good, but dear lord Femto (or was it Phemt, Femuth? something like that) people like them some Nostalgia Goggles. Like how the cheesy J-pop opening is soooo much better than the newer soundtrack.
its not entirely cgi.
its cgi characters with 2d backgrounds.
