What is the point of inquiring about vices?

During season change, when you inquire about vices, it seems to worsen the vices of a given person. What is the point of this? If the vice is already revealed, doesn't this just worsen the effects?

Worse the vice the greater the benfits when you sacrifice them. If someobe has a weak vice you lose more rep vs if the vice is higher. More so if the vice is weaker than the virtue. I.e. +10 vs -5 will hurt you more than a +5 vs a -10

Right. One of the keys of the game is to find the worst sinners in the community and sacrifice them, so as to purify the community. Whether or not you reveal their vice during inquiries, they'll still have the full effect if you use them as an advisor, so knowing who they are so you can sacrifice them makes things a lot less difficult.
