I liked Vanishing of Ethan Carter more that this.. it is pretty similar, but got me more emotionally invested and was more atmospheric.
Firewatch is also good

Dear Esther and probably Everybody's Gone to the Rapture.

NO THIS IS HATTRICK Jan 16, 2018 @ 11:06am
Just like to preface this to say that Edith Finch is a wholly unique game even in its genre and you probably won't find anything else quite like it currently.

- A Story About My Uncle (not the gameplay, but the atmosphere)
- Gone Home (the closest thematically and stylistically)

As others mentioned Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Firewatch, Dear Esther and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. Others you might want to check out but not as similar:
- Brothers A Tale of Two Sons
- Oxenfree
- KONA
- Dr. Langeskov, The Tiger, and The Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist
- Near Death
- Among the Sleep
- Life is Strange
- The Flame in the Flood
- Octodad
- Lumino City
- Jacob Jones and the Bigfoot Mystery
- Puzzle Agent

They're all story driven games. There'd be even more if we descended into the horror genre.

Great list

I'd add Murdered: Soul Suspect and Contrast to the list. They have a similar vibe, i.e. atmospheric and mostly focused on unraveling the story.
I have quit gaming Jan 26, 2018 @ 12:22pm
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!

Vanishing of Ethan Carter is the best game of this sort available, imho. Family drama too, but better looking, more varied, and more creative, imho. The misterious premise sorts itself out in the end. It's a pretty sober tale, to be frank.
And because others mentioned a host of games, I'd also add Mind: Path to Thalamus. Another narrative driven first person family drama with level design and puzzles that are, imho, among the best available, right there with Portal 2 (when it was new) and Talos Principle, but very different. Takes some time to pick up speed, but boy is it worth it.
I'd rate both of those mentioned games higher than Edith Finch, although, granted, Finch is not a puzzle game at all, so maybe comparisons are not 100% fair. Anyways, I felt this game promissed so much in the first half an hour, but it feels as if the devs ran out of steam quickly.

If you have a playstation 3 or 4 you could try out The Unfinished Swan, seeing it's suppose to tell more about Milton. It's more of a envirmental puzzlegame though, but seeing it's connected you might like it.

Lol what are you talking about, I just looked up the preview for the game and it is nothing like Edith Finch.

Ethan Carter was similar yes but god I could not recommend that game because of that awful ending. I was so mad at the end, it all felt like such a waste of time >.< at least Edith Finch had an ending I could be somewhat happy about, although I sure would have liked to have heard the rest of Edie's story........

If you want to have another "wtf"-moment try "The Path"...which lets you play as little red riding hood. A walking simulator in which you are urged to leave the straight path to grandmas house...great art, some gruesome moments.

Another game to add to the list:

The Novelist
