I hate playing with controllers (Yes, I'm strange!)
Is it playable (enough) without one, and still be fun?

I want to know this too... the "controller strongly recommended" is a big red flag for me.

No, it plays fine with keyboard guys. It's apparently because the devs think some of instances are improved with twin stick. I really don't think it should say "strongly recommended". Improved maybe? But I'm not personally sure, I might play through with a controller to experience the difference.

Also, you're not strange for hating controllers, this is PC after all.

I can second this, found the experience more immersive with controller at one point or another, but to be fair, it is totally fine with m+k;

Why people who play PC hate controllers, though is still out of my reach. I use different kind of input methods for different things, but I guess I grew up in an environment, where people were discussing which console is better and you can own both, a NES and a 286. Today I am using PC for most of my gaming, even though some game I like to play relaxed on TV with my bluetooth controller or play on my gaming laptop (yeah, these things exist ;) or 3ds when I am on business trips.

Can I ask why you hate controllers? Is it because they are less accurate (I do not use them for FPS for example) or because you do not like the feeling? Or is it because of PC masterrace? :hmm:

While you CAN use the base of a screwdriver to hammer a nail, it's better to use a hammer. A console style controller is not the right tool for the job when you're playing a first person perspective game, that's what a keyboard and trackball/mouse are for. At the same time, a mouse and keyboard are not the ideal input devices to play a hockey game.

Any game that requires precision movement, like aiming a gun, is not meant for controllers... which is why console games have to add auto aim. The same is true for flight sims, like War Thunder, which prioritize using a mouse and keyboard over a flight stick. While the flight stick woudl be the superior tool for the job, War Thunder gives the mouse so many crutches that it almost makes the planes fly themselves.

So in essence... it's the way that games get dumbed down and have built in trainers to accomodate people who want to hammer nails with a screwdriver. PC gamers generally have access to a much wider range of tools, and a console controller is usually not the tool for the job.

Played through with KbM, no problem.

There are instances where gameplay shifts from acting in FP to directing an object through space in FP that may be less jarring on a controller but it doesn't effect the story or events themselves. Oh, and a repetitive bit that may be less tedious sweeping a stick than a mouse but, again, no impact on the game.

(Yep. Me cutting & pasting me from a previous discussion. But this is what I wanted to know going in, so...)

I solved the whole game with mouse and keyboard with no problem whatsover. I only actually knew that a controller was strongly recommended from what people here on the forums were saying.

This is such a arrogant viewpoint.

Every console shooter released these days has an option to disable auto-aim and are perfectly playable without assists. In fact, many of them are actually more playable without the autoaim since you don't have the game constantly overcorrecting your reticle movement.

There's also no "right" way to play any kind of game. People can play a game however they want with whatever accesory or input method they want, and that's perfectly okay.

If anybody is wrong here, it's people like you who look down on others for their playstyle preferences out of some misguided belief of superiority.

I also went through the whole game w/keyboard & mouse before seeing the controllor recommendation. You'll be fine. :)

I played & finished without a controller. It's totally fine without + very enjoyable

How is that an arrogant viewpoint? He asked why we don't like controllers, and I responded with why *I* don't want to use a controller on a game *LIKE THIS ONE*. If a controller is what works better for a certain type of game (most sports games), then that's what I'm going to use, because it's THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB. I have zero ♥♥♥♥♥ to give about what input device you, or anyone else, wants to use and I never once said that you have to do as I do.

What I do care about is when a poorly designed game dictates what you have to use to play it. There are still games coming out that won't even let PC users rebind some, or all, of their keys, or invert the mouse, and when they do allow it, some of them don't even bother to update their user interface to refer to using a rebound key (I'm looking at you, Skyrim, Dispatcher, Investigator). There are still recent AAA titles that have auto-aim that cannot be disabled (I'm looking at you, Fallout 3 and New Vegas).

If there is no "right" way to play any kind of game, then why are there still games coming out with trainer style cheats built into them that cannot be disabled, hard coded keys, and there are plenty of games out there that throw in controller support... but not the controller you want, it has to be the xbox controller. Developers seem to disagree.

Carry on hammering nails with your screwdriver though.

because some movements on the controller try to imitate a closer feel to real life movement, which kind of succeeds. I call it a nice feature, but not game changing in any way.

Thanks for answering. I can agree on the precision part. With my keyboard and mouse setup (which was not cheap) I have much better precision in FPS. I totally relate.

About the precision. At no part in this game I felt any precision was needed, so I really enjoyed playing it laid back with bluetooth elite pad.

I like the analogy about tools. For FPS or RTS I most of the time will take m+k without a thought (in BF1 I mixed them, as I feel more comfortable flying with a pad than with m+k, even though m+k should be superior once getting used to, and m+k for the rest), for platformers like Salt & Sanctuary or console ports I prefer the pad, as the controls usually were designed for that in the first place.

Agree that having a wider set of tools is a profit on pc and while m+k are fine or superior for a quite huge variety of games, I believe people should have an open mind about trying something different. They might even enjoy it.

BTW: I did not find your answer arrogant, only the part about dumbing it down for people with certain expectations might come across as a tiny bit rude to some ;)

Have a nice day!

Yes, it is playable without a controller just fine. There are some scenes that require inventive manipulation of what would be the right stick on a controller so fling that mouse around until you get to more words flowing out of the item. I played the later half of the game on an xbone controller just bc it was more comfortable but I did fine on the kb&m as well.

I played through it a couple hours ago with mouse and keyboard and it worked perfectly fine.

It's a good game/interactive story. Short and not as pretty as firewatch or as graphically intense as the vanishing of ethan carter but overall very enjoyable. The house alone is amazing.

There is just one minor detail that is really bad ... the Finches have what feels like 100 copies of every book they own.

I never owned a gamepad (i think that is what you mean with controller). I don't hate gamepads but my hands are really big and i can't use one comfortably (i tried at a friends house). Besides that i don't see the usefulness of a gamepad in any situation/game.

I'm playing exclusivly with mouse and keyboard for ~25 years now. (of course i use a wheel for driving and a hotas for flying)
