I alway felt like Vito tried to look out for Joe like a big brother would(and Joe incorrectly thought he was the one looking out for Vito) so it managed to be a sad ending even though your character lives. I would have liked the ability to save him somehow and it didn't really feel like it was supposed to be the only ending so what Racuch said makes sense.
