"The open world of Mafia II is much more explorable in the subsequent DLC packs, where the DLC missions are structured like side missions in GTA IV (i.e., enter a mission waypoint, complete the mission, and return to open-world exploration). Mafia II also has additional side activities which serve to complement the main story and extend your time in Empire Bay (e.g., Playboy magazine collectibles, Wanted Poster collectibles, vehicle collectibles, unlockable artwork, and various achievement challenges). In Mafia II, the world is a little more interactive than in L.A. Noire, because you can visit, purchase from, and rob weapon shops, clothing stores, gas stations, bars, and diners. You can also stop at pay phones to lose your wanted rating, visit body shops to repair and upgrade your vehicles, and sell excess (or stolen) vehicles to Mike Bruski at the local junkyard for cash."
You can look for good places to start a shootout, the alley behind Marty's apt. is a good spot.
