Steam version of Mafia II classic is definitely broken
The game refuses to launch on Steam. I used to play it without issues about a year ago on the same hardware and Windows 10 OS. After clicking "Play," Steam attempts to update the executable, but the game crashes immediately without starting. I’ve tried uninstalling PhysX, as suggested by others, and launching the game directly from the executable in the game’s directory, but nothing works. I even reinstalled PhysX and all related components, but that didn’t help. On the other hand, I installed the GOG version of Mafia II (the "Director's Cut"), and it runs perfectly fine, even with the latest version of PhysX installed. Steam, please fix this.

So i copied the executable and DLLs from the GOG version and paste it in the steam version and now the game is working fine. If any1 owns game on GOG as well just go to directory Mafia II and than inside PC folder copy all the files including executable but don't copy the folders and paste in steam directory in same PC folder and overwrite all files, the game will work now

Just copy these files into steamapps/common/Mafia II/PC and overwrite all files in there, start the game normally from the steam, achievements and everything is working fine

thank you very much for your help now my game is running
Saez Dec 24, 2024 @ 12:54pm
I put the files in the right folder but on the other hand I don't understand why the game keeps crashing in chapter 2 and besides I didn't receive the achievement for completing chapter 1
You've just saved my christmas eve. Thank you very much, cheers! :)

Thank you very much for the files, the game launches now! However, the game says that I can't access the DLCs because I have apparently not purchased them, although I have. I wonder if this issue is linked to the downloaded files somehow? Can't recall this happening before

Cap the framerate below 100fps & turn off apex physx in video settings to avoid crashing. Gme has issues with fps exceeding 100+fps according to pcgamingwiki. I got chapter 1 achievements unlocked for me so far even after putting these files. Make sure u are not putting steam in offline mode before playing this game because achievements don't unlock in this game without internet connection, this is an old issue not related to the files i shared

I double-checked, and all the DLCs are working fine on my end: Betrayal of Jimmy, Jimmy's Vendetta, and Joey's Adventure are all functioning properly. When you select downloadable content in the main menu of the game, it will open the Steam store page, but you can ignore it and close it. All DLC items will show a tick mark next to them, indicating they are installed and active. In-game, the DLC costumes are also working fine.

To ensure everything is set up correctly, go to the game's properties in your Steam library and check that all DLCs are ticked. If any are unchecked, manually tick them and allow Steam to install them.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work for me still. I've made sure that DLC's are ticked on steam, but unfortunately no dice. I get a warning saying that the DLC's are installed but that I haven't purchased them, and therefore can't access them.

Honestly don't know why its happening to you as every DLC, costume items are working fine on my PC even after copying the GOG files. Same with many other people on steam forums that i shared the fix with, DLCs are working fine for every1 of them

Managed to make the game run without the GOG files. All I had to was run the game's exe with admin rights and win 7 compatibility (which would do nothing), and then remove both again, run the exe again, and now the game is running fine, and the DLCs are working too. Just leaving this here in case anyone has issues with the DLCs like me :)
