I also bought this from steam on sale and it will not launch game, it goes through the first time set up then says preparing to launch mafia ll , then it says "installing windows? installer" and it closes the dialog box and reopens saying the same thing over and over and over and never launches the game? WTF steam? I have no problems installing other older games and games from the same era and DX versions so WTF is going on? I validated game files and tried running in XP sp3 compatibility and as admin and its the same every time. I know i am not alone in this issue. , My specs are all well above requirements, and the game says it will run in win 7 64 bit systems so what the hell is up with this? Please help......

This is happening to me too. Ran as administrator, checked the files, restarted my computer. Nothing works. It prepares the PhysX setup and then tells me to wait while it configures for a literal second and then completely gives up.

I literally just deleted Nvidia PhysX and tried installing again and it instantly worked. It didn't even seem to install another version unless it was quicker than I could catch it.

I read that someone solved his problem with disabling all kinds of overlay-programs.
So if you're having issues with Mafia II crashing at startup try to turn off the Steam in-game community for example.

Other programs with overlay functions which may cause issues:
Gigabyte OC Guru
Fraps
Mumble
Xfire

Hope this will help people solve their crash issues.

If your running a modern Nvidia video card and Windows 7 or 8.1, go into control panel, programs, progam and features, right click Nvidia PhysX, choose repair. Solved the issue for me.
