is there a way to see the boats carrying capacity before buying?

not directly that i know of, but keep in mind that the ship's quotas usually reflect capacity

The right side of the screen when in the boat has the cargo indicator, a mouse over will let you know the capacity if empty or full, and weight of cargo / fish and free space if partly filled.

No there isnt. But I wouldnt call it a waste of money considering I always end up buying every boat anyways. And even if you do want to call it a waste of money, I wouldnt worry about wasting money because its extremely easy to get. I know it doesnt seem like that at first but it is.
If you have the crab DLC, buy the Selfy and go crabbing while they are still in season. If you dont have the crab DLC, income skyrockets in September because more cod are available.

i bought the Selfy when i saw how fast it could, 30 knots is a lot better than 9, and yes the crab fishing is a gold mine and is a lot easier to do, pot - bait - push done, then empty pot, sort crabs, easy money,

i bought the Sjarken (think thats what its called) but the capacity doesn't seem that good, a couple 500 hook lines and its full.

As with nets and longlines, the maximum amount of pots you can have is the maximum amount you can have on board at once. So you can run multiple sets if you want to
I run 3 sets of pots(8 pots in each set) with the selfy because its so fast.
Go put a set out, go back to harbor buy 8 more, skip 2 hours, go put that set out.
Go back to harbor and do the same thing again.
That allows me to fill crab quota in 10-15 in game days leaving plenty of crab season(and money) to get the Svalbard and fill that quota as well.
For boats that have a smaller capacity, I try to find a harbor that has a few good schools of fish close to it. I set out enough lines to fill capacity, then go to harbor and skip 2 hours, then go put out enough lines in another school to fill capacity.
I always skip 2 hours at harbor to compensate for the time it takes to haul and rebait pots or haul lines/nets when it's time to get my catch.
