How long to wait before retrieving your longline?
I just started playing this game and I am in my 'noob phase', so my apologies for the ignorance.

So I was playing the tutorial of the longline fishing (got stuck in it, too at the point where I had to start a whole new career without the tutorial basics as it wouldn't allow me to get rid of that 'get a longline at the 'fish market' ' thingy which I did 2 times within that tutorial), but the thing with longline fishing is that no matter how many hours I will skip (the minimum of 4 hours to a whole 24 hours) - I only have 0 to 1 bait.. And yes I am fishing on a spot based on an 'all species' area.

So what's the required waiting time in order to have a proper catch? How many hours should I wait before retrieving the line, at a normal fishing day..? I can imagine that the catches differe depended on the time of the day and weather (and fishing spot, obviously) but this is getting on my nerves as I only have failed catches. I am fishing on a shrimp bait with a basic long line (same one used in the tutorial), does this have any influence on the species you catch and the amount of it..?

To your question on bait...yes it makes a difference on the spieces to catch. If your just starting I recommend mackerel for bait. As for lenght of lines... sometimes I pull mine in from 18hrs onwards catch rate around 12 or just under depending on the shoals.

I'll say around the same time. No longer then 22 hrs. Remeber to count the time it takes from port to your line aswell. So in sort. Between 18-22 hrs

Heres my routine,

Drop 8- 1000 hook lines in a spot, once they are out I check how long the 1st line has been out (e.g 3hrs) and that tells me how long it took to put them all out. now I head to port (no fast travel) say its 4 hours away. once there I check the 1st line again, it says 7 hrs, so I know it will take 4 hours to get back, thats 11 hours the lines will be out. so I can rest for about 7-8 hours and head back in time to start lifting the 1st line again around 18-20 hours.

also when you leave port, take note of how long it took to get to the spot you want cause if its too far you wont get back in time. pitty we cant drop our anchors and skip tme. (click anchor=skip time ehh??)

So shrimp bait for the first times (the most expensive one as well) isn't always a good jumpstart to it, unlike what the tutorial claims..? That's really good to know, will try that out as I've only been (attempting to) fish with shrimp bait which until now only costs more than it earns. And with the latter (the 18 hours onwards), do you suggest waiting at least 18 hours before retrieving your line..?

@Reddinkill, so waiting more than 22 hours will affect the catch in a negative kind of way..? That clears a whole lot up, because I assumed leaving the line the longer will give you a better catch ratio. The tutorial never went further into this, so I could only assume. Thank you for your advice!

My second mistake was the fast traveling for sure. The tutorial said it was okay to do so, but I was already having a suspicion that it'll only influence the bait ratio in a negative way because you're skipping too much time without me even directly realizing it.. And the not able to skip time while out fishing was for sure a thing that bothered me, too. And the anchor thingy is a great idea, my suggestion for the developers team regarding the skipping time thingy was when you're entering the downstairs cabin lodge you should be able to 'sleep' on sea and skip the time by clicking the clock that is hanging there (at least in that simple wooden vessel you launch your career in, not sure how the more advanced boats are designed) - that for sure saves the effort on getting back to the dock and more importantly the fuel usage.

Anyway, what I will do for sure in my next fishing trip (as someone not experienced as you three obviously) is using mackerel as bait in a 250¤ hook line as a noob startup and see how that'll work out on the catch ratio, leaving it there for maximum 18 hours by getting back to the dock without fast travel. Underwhile I will check the time it takes on traveling from certain spots. With that keeping in mind I can calculate certain rest times and the point of arrival on the ETA. I think not leaving the harbor too far is a great idea for the first few round, don't you agree? Thanks for helping out folks, much appreciated!
