Lunar bow Trawling - Understanding the sonar
I know there have been posts about this, and youtube videos, I've watched them all, but I still feel like I'm missing something.

When I'm looking at the sonar... I look at the Nav, and let's say I'm heading south according to my Nav.

if I'm heading south, Starboard should be on the right.... Port should be on the left... but the doors show exactly the opposite. Am I actually going South? Or am I going North?

I steer toward schools of fish, but they appear to be going the other way... okay, I can see that.. but the confusion still remains.

Why are Port and Starboard shown the way they are? Is the Sonar north aligned so that I see North as North? I'm very confused.

you are looking from the net to your boat its the same as if you are driving normal if you look close at the cone of the net you can see the infared camera https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/912414300739122712/CF23B8042A66574E6F862069CE110055CE6AAA61/ that camera faces your boat and the sonar is on the doors

That kinda makes it more confusing... On a ship, Starboard is always to the RIGHT if you are looking FORWARD on the ship. The Sonar seems to reverse that, just because you're facing backwards in the control seat. Port is always left facing forward, Starboard is always right facing forward, bow is always the front, stern is always the back. it seems like the boxes on the sonar are named incorrectly.

its right you are look towards your ship from the net port left starbord right this is somthing i learned in flight school left red right green and that image between the doors is your boat

So the sonar image is literally reversed? if I'm going south, the sonar image shows the bottom as north?

the image in the bottom right is the infared image looking towards your boat the bar below that is the sonar that will give you a depth to a school of fish the nav well that just tells you where you are going and has nothing to do with the infared images

I'm a fairly intelligent guy.... I understand naval navigation.... but the *infrared* and the Nav make no sense to me....

I'm actively playing now... here's a screenshot...

My ship is moving SouthEast.... which means, on a standard map, where the top is north, Starboard should be on the left side of the display (facing south, Starboard is West).

However... note the Infrared... where the Starboard Door is on the RIGHT side of the display. There is no way that's possible if the map is aligned where the top is north.

Edit... okay, I was using the term Sonar and the Infrared image incorrectly.... but I hope you see what I mean.

Look at it as a camera behind the vessel, just like 3rd person view for example. It shows the boat from behind, starboard always right - port always left. Regardless of what direction you travel on the mini map (nav).

the infared image has nothing to do with nav or direction the infared image is to see whats comming up to your net underwater

That's kinda what I was feeling... the terms Starboard and Port are used as "right" and "left" instead of the ship's true Starboard and Port...

No, it shows the ships true starboard and port. The infrared ALWAYS points from the trawl towards the vessel, just like if you set up a camera showing your boat from behind. It's not linked with direction of travel.
