Running sluggish and choppy.
I thought the steam version would remedy these problems. I was just wondering if anyone knows how to fix the sluggish and choppy movement in this game. I am on Windows 8. Maybe a step by step guide on how to fix this. As a whole it runs fine and nothing messes up but its just slow and choppy in some areas especially with a lot of stuff around. Thank you.

The best way to fix this is to change your config settings to render the game via software instead of hardware. All the other fixes that people post on here are for the most part wrong and not really solving the problem. I run the game with the High Res patch on Windows 10 and all settings completely standard and I also had the horrible stuttering and lag issues and like I said all I had to change was the Renderer option in the config file from 1 to 0 (1 renders from hardware while 0 renders from software) and the issue was completely resolved. It's because this game was built with Direct X7 which has largely been abandoned so you need to choose for it to render from software so that Windows will emulate the Direct X7 environment for the game because your hardware most likely doesn't have the data to support it anymore because it's so out of date.

Hey skdursh, do I need the hi res patch to change the renderer option? Because I can't seem to find it in the config file.

Sorry if this doesn't work for everyone or if it's been mentioned a million times before:

I just fixed it in 2 seconds by setting the app to run in Windows 7 Compatibility Mode. Make sure to do that to the Arcanum app, not the launcher.

Hahahaaa lies that apparently only works temporarily. Keep playing and the lag builds up. I'll try the other solutions.

Yep this was my same findings as well. Changing the renderer to software instead of hardware fixed it for me, too.

Thanks for the comments, but fortunately the new unofficial patch fixed all the problems for me. Runs great and fixed the bugs. It comes with the hd res patch too.

This.

I'm running Win 8.1. I tried all the fixes listed in discussions here, scoured the internet for solutions, I left no rock unturned, but while I could get the steam version of the game to run, boy was it choppy, combat was awfully slow, think stop motion, the more followers I had and the more stuff on screen, the more unplayable it became.

I decided to try the Gog Version. My god, what a difference, I didn't even have to change any default settings, let alone install anything ontop of what you dl from gog. The game is super smooth from there and even allows alt tabbing.

If you can't get the steam version to run, get it at Gog instead. It's cheap and worth the effort I think.

I agree. Steam version isn't playable for me either.
