What does perception even do?
I have a character with master in fire arms, skill 4.5. Equiping eye geat adds +2 perception but does not increase chance to hit.

Chance to hit is by skill, not stats. Perception is required to up your skill in firearms, but besides that it also increases your scroll range so that you can see (and shoot at) enemies further away from you. I understand that this is at odds with what is is written in the manual, and generally not really obvious. If you try making a character with as little perception as possible, you can notice a substantial change.

Interesting. If i had an archer character- perception would be pointless for him?

Unless you intend to engage them at great distance, then yes it would be a bit redundant.

Isnt distanced dependant on a weapon? I had 15 perception and elephant gun with range 15, the range that i can shoot at was very small compared to distance i can see.

It is, but you can only choose to shoot at something if you can mouse-over it. Certain guns have much longer range than other (think looking-lass rifle) and you can engage enemies that are off screen for a short-range character. Still, higher levels are pretty much still only useful for levelling up skills, as the longest range weapon can't shoot as far as you can see at perception 20 as far as I know.

If you don't want to use the spell or the electric device that reveals traps you can just see them with enough perception. I'd suggest you still lvl it.
