Arcanum

Game is crashing
I bought Arcanum yesterday and played it for ~3 hours after installing some of the recommended mods (the official and unofficial patch). I saved, exited, all that jazz. Today, I can't play the game. The launcher comes up, I click "Launch", I see the Sierra logo, Troika, then the "Arcanum loading..." screen comes up. A few seconds later, the screen goes completely black and then the game shuts down instantly, leaving me staring at my desktop and the Arcanum launcher. I have no idea what happened. Does anyone have an idea how I could get around this problem?

Edit: I tried restarting my computer out of curiousity to see if it would fix the issue. Interestingly, this did fix the initial problem. I played the game for a few minutes before exiting, quitting, and then relaunching the game again. The problem returned. So I guess I have to restart my computer every time I want to play Arcanum...though this is somewhat annoying and I would prefer not to do this. Anyone else ever have this problem?

The same thing has happened to me - I have played for about 3 hours, but now the game crashes after it hits the loading screen. So far I have tried the following without resolving the issue:

- Verify game files
- Reinstall

I'll let you know if I find a solution.

I'm having this issue too, any fix?

I don't even get the 3 hours. Te first time I started it up it did the same as you described. I found some fixes, but they seem to deal with other issues. Looking forward to a simple suolution! Have windows 10 64 bits

Well...glad (?) to know other people are having the same problem. Unfortunately I haven't been able to figure out how to fix it. The game still crashes upon starting, sometimes even after I've restarted my computer...

No one has any ideas? I'd really like to enjoy this game instead of just having it sitting on my games list, unable to do anything with it.

Well, it's a long shot, but sometimes older games have problems with new 4- or 8-core computers. Did anyone try to assign just one core to it?

Have you made any changes to files etc? Have you tried diabling Antivirus for a temporary amount of time, just to see it that's the cause?

Have tried the above, recently reset computer because of other issue, will try all these again

Are you using dual monitors? Seen this causing issues with older games too.

nope, just a laptop

Do you have the issues without the patches?

Playing on a win10 machine, i was experiencing slowdown over time and then some graphical problems with the HD patches. I reinstalled with no patches, so I'm just in original resolution. I also made a small change with the launcher txt file to correct the D3D issues, and now have no slow down.

I never experienced hard crashes though, just trying to suggest common issues. :/

Years too late probably and dunno if this helps but I also changed some settings. I set Arcanum.exe to run as adminstrator. I also used the following settings below in the config.ini file to enable the program to work better for me on my Windows 10 64 bit computer. Also am using the unofficial patches.

//Arcanum High Resolution Patch Settings

//Basic:
Width = 1920 // original: 800
Height = 1080 // original: 600
BitDepth = 32 // original: 16
DialogFont = 1 // 0 = size 12, 1 = size 14, 2 = size 18
LogbookFont = 1 // 0 = size 12, 1 = size 14
MenuPosition = 1 // 0 = top, 1 = center, 2 = bottom
MainMenuArt = 2 // 0 = black, 1 = fade to black, 2 = wood
Borders = 1 // 1 = add borders to most UI graphics

//Graphics:
Windowed = 0 // 0 = fullscreen mode, 1 = windowed mode
Renderer = 1 // 0 = software, 1 = hardware
DoubleBuffer = 1 // 0 = disabled, 1 = enabled (unless windowed)
DDrawWrapper = 1 // 1 = install DDrawCompat wrapper
ShowFPS = 0 // 0 = no change, 1 = always enabled

//Advanced:
ScrollFPS = 255 // original: 35, max: 255
ScrollDist = 0 // original: 10, infinite: 0
PreloadLimit = 255 // original: 30 tiles, max: 255
BroadcastLimit = 255 // original: 10 tiles, max 255
Logos = 0 // 0 = skip Sierra/Troika logos
Intro = 0 // 0 = skip the main menu intro clip

I ended up having to raise the priority on the arcanum.exe process by one level as well. So far no more crashing.
