Way to convert Blu Ray 3d to SBS
Hi,

I've got a collection of 3D Blu rays I would like to be able to watch on the Vive. I've been using AnyDVD and a trial version of Stereoscopic Player to convert it to SBS on the fly so I could watch it through the video player. That seems to work pretty well, but I didn't know if there was any better way to do it. I would prefer a way to rip the blu-ray to my hard drive already in the SBS format instead of using Stereoscopic Player. I was on the verge of purchasing the full version of Stereoscopic Player, but wanted to see if anyone had any better method before I took the plunge. Thanks!

The biggest civil liberty that America protects is the right for people with Intellectual Property to get paid. I understand the law wanting to back up the studios in protecting their profits by ensuring people have to buy their product to get it. I think the problem with HD is that its such high quality, they don't want anyone ripping it for any reason because they view that as losing control of their product profit rights if some one decides to start selling bootleg copies. I am not going to do that..but they have no way of knowing that for sure..so they'd rather just nip it in the bud right away. My dad would side with them. It never took off, but he created a VHS tape that counted every time it played (for rental stores). As he put it.."Every time you rent or play a tape, it should have a meter.. like a gas pump. The movie studios should know exactly how many times each movie rental has been viewed.)". Part of his patent was to seal the tape in a way you couldn't open it, and to make sure that no one could run multiple copies off without having to pay for it each time you made a copy..
I'm all for capitalism, it's not perfect but relies on greed, which is a pretty universal trait in humans, so tends to work. I wasn't specifically talking hollywood when mentioning civil liberties, they tend to be quite liberal, if just well behind the curve.

As a US citizen, no, you won't get away with sharing, they'll give you a very long leash but one day they'd yank it.
So, this is kind of an ugly way to do this, BUT what I can do is run my blu-ray player into a 2D-3D sbs converter box, from there to a HDMI to component converter, which I then runwhich I THEN run into my HD PVR. I did this with Lost in Space, and for a movie that predates when 3D had its resurgence, it looks AMAZING! in 3D. Its a little dark in 3D Vision on my Asus Laptop, but playing it on my Vive with my desktop system, its perfect. I intend to do this with a few other movies. I will say the file size is HUGE! Its about 1 GByte for every 10 minutes of the movie...

Ok, I may have simpler solution for you, I'll kick my ass in gear and write the code, I'll let you know when it's done
So far, I have been able to do convert Armageddon, Lost in Space, Immortal (Ad Finitum), some clips from the new West World show, and tonight I am doing The Fifth Element. The files are kind of huge (figure about a gigabyte for every 10-15 minutes of film in the .mp4 format.

They all look pretty amazing in 3D sbs on the Vive. I can't wait to show some of these off to friends..

Is that as sbs or hsbs, sbs is just about 4K, so yeah it will be bigger
When you use a HDMI to Component adapter, you downgrade your video to 1080i instead of 1080p. I suspect that I am splitting a 1080i signal. Although, I am not sure, but its possible the HD PVR bumps that back to progressive. Other than occasionally dropping some frames, I don't see any video degradation..
