Way to convert Blu Ray 3d to SBS
Hi,

I've got a collection of 3D Blu rays I would like to be able to watch on the Vive. I've been using AnyDVD and a trial version of Stereoscopic Player to convert it to SBS on the fly so I could watch it through the video player. That seems to work pretty well, but I didn't know if there was any better way to do it. I would prefer a way to rip the blu-ray to my hard drive already in the SBS format instead of using Stereoscopic Player. I was on the verge of purchasing the full version of Stereoscopic Player, but wanted to see if anyone had any better method before I took the plunge. Thanks!

DVDfab[dvdfab.cn], they are legit, used for years but I used a disposable card all the same

Someone posted something on reddit recently on using 3DBD2MK3D

I haven't tried it myself but apparently you can convert an encoded 3D MKV to a SBS or OU movie.

OK. Thanks for the replies guys. I'll have to take a closer look at DVDFab. I'm not clear if I would need the Copy or Ripper or both. And I'm not sure what the PassKey they sell is for. Is that required if the Blu Ray is copy protected in addition to Copy or Ripper? I'm still checking out the 3DBD2MK3D. Thanks

Copy does just that, decrypts but keeps BD structure, so you can create an iso with all menus and extras. I generally use ripper to full SBS, for archival, then htab with ffmpeg if neds be. There should be a demo period, enough to play with a couple of disks

I still have to experiment with this, (might be a goal for tonight).. But I have a hauppauge HD DVR Pro that allows me to rip blue ray content. I might try to rip some of it to a few different formats and see what looks best (or will even play) in SimpleVR...

Yeah I have one of those too but definitely ripping will be faster and if you do do GPU encoding, it will take 10-15 minutes for a 2 hour film. If you encode with crf 18 you should get close to the original quality.

Plus when I tried it, HDMI direct I just got blue screen, and when I routed it through an HDMI to component converter, I got a message saying that the player can only play 3D content to a device with a 3D screen. And it doesn't give you any options to get around it.

Not sure what you're trying to do there but it doesn't sound right. You need to rip to an open standard format such as mkv or mp4. If you rip to iso, no it won't work unless you mount. You are trying to play on the vive, right? What's with the component converter?
MainFragger Sep 29, 2016 @ 1:07pm
HDMI has built in DRM (Digital Rights Managment) that doesn't let you record it to the Hauppauge HD PVR (or anything else). But sometimes you can get around that by converting HDMI to Component (R, G, B video+R&W audio) which passes digital information over an analog medium and strips out/ignores the DRM signal. If you do that professionally to sell videos, its illegal/bootlegging. But if you are just doing it to own it yourself, it depends a bit.. Some distributors are harsher about it than others. But since no one would know that you just ripped it for yourself anyway..

Unfortunately, the HDMI isn't a passive player on Blu-Ray..they actively try to determine what you are playing to and what you are playing. If you try to play 3D to a non-3D monitor, it won't even let you try to play it. It doesn't give you an option to play it anyway. The funny thing is, I know my one Toshiba Blu-Ray player predates even THINKING of 3D.. But if I put the 3D Blu-Ray in there, it gives me a message telling me that that disk can only play in a 3D player.

oh, you're trying to play a 3d movie to the HD PVR, no it won't work. The HD PVR 1 I think can only do 576p@30 and 2 can do 1080i@30. You'd need a capture card that runs 1080p@120, that's 120 frames per second. Don't think it exists and if it did it would miss a frame here and there, very jarring in 3D. Plus a component converter will not afaik understand hdmi frame packing, which you're using btw.

Well, I CAN rip a normal Blu-Ray this way. So the HDIM/Component issue isn't a problem. The 3D just makes it a pain in the butt because it won't even play in side by side format...which is what I was hoping for, so I can just rip it, and then play the side by side video in SimpleVR.

I still have one more trick I just thought of.. I might be able to disable 3D playing in Cyberlink when I am playing it on my laptop, and just rip it by feeding it back to the PVR...

Stop, yes, you can play normal blurays that way, so yes the converter works. 3D movies typically output to hdmi frame packing, so that's the left eye followed by the right eye in a container which most component converters don't understand. Save yourself the hassle and just break the encryption, it's illegal in my country to not allow backups, your country may be different.
MainFragger Sep 29, 2016 @ 1:27pm
Recent laws have made it so its legal to make your personal backups, until you cross the HD line.. Then its not..

Yeah, ok, US. Your country has an interesting idea of civil liberties. Try this: get a chromecast output your screen to it while playing SBS. It works for me when I really need to. Do it in a VM if you don't want to tie up your machine.
