i was wondering if there was any way i could play this on pc without a controller.

You need a controller to play this on pc, having played it I don't think it would work well with mouse and keyboard anyway.

I can't even beat the first level. How can I avoid the enemies? I can't shoot and trying to dodge always ends in my dead.

What am I doing wrong?

As far as I know you need a dual stick controller. One to control your ship and the other one to control the weapon aiming. I think even if D-pad would work it would be much harder and not enjoyable to do the aming with that.

@sethac: the game has a tutorial, it should teach you how to kill the enemies. Mark the enemies by moving the cross hair over them and then press the "fire" button. On xbox controller it's called RT-Button.

Even so, you should at least check steam page for the game where it totally says that controller is required... And dual stick at that. All written there

Humble monthly is a subscription that doesn't tell you the games you're getting before you pay. "Just read the steam page" isn't an option. PC games should support mouse and keyboard.

you forget that some of us have controllers but prefer to play with keyboard
