The game description reads, "Only by reaching the very end will you unveil the terrible truth to the shocking events that eventually shut down the orphanage."
Well, I obvioulsy did something in the "wrong" order, because, after playing only 15 minutes I found something that triggered the revelation of the "shocking events!" It was the ending early, because the police were called, and the newspaper headline was about how I, a former resident there, discovered the truth.
I could back out of that scene, and continue to play, and use my inventory, but really, what's the point? I know what happened.
Is that happening to everyone who is playing?
Or, are players thinking the game's over at that point, and not playing more? I thought it was over until I realized I hadn't used inventory yet. "Continue" just repeated the ending, so I used the back button to continue playing.
If that hadn't happened, I was having a lot of fun. I am not big on point and click adventure games, most of them make me sick with movement, but this one was not like that. I like having to take notes, no hints, etc.
So, I recommend the game if the events play in the right order, but I don't recommend it because the end was ruined for me, and it may be ruined for you.

Very nice game

Mystery Of Rivenhallows is a simplistic adventure game that most people probably acquired from a bundle of a famous site. It seemed interesting despite the not so great (pretty bad to be precise) reviews. Unfortunately these reviews are right (once again) and sadly Mystery Of Rivenhallows is not a good, but a very dull game, which fails to be exciting. The game not only disappoints in the adventure section, but also as a thriller (what it is supposed to be) and thus should rather be labelled as Misery of Rivenhallows.

Most people would still give (as I have) this game a chance, because it is a thriller and is supposed to be scary. To spare the reader from disappointment, let me tell you: we won't be dying of mystery overdose while playing (the ending is relatively predictable) and there's only 1 (yes, one) ghost sighting altogether.

According to the story, the game's protagonist, a journalist, was once a student in Rivenhallows Orphanage, from where children have mysteriously disappeared. He returns and decides to uncover the secret and find out what happened to them (why now?). Because if the police did not find anything back then, we sure will now, right?
The game puts us right to the entrance of the orphanage and after succesfully finding a way inside, our "thrilling" (less than an hour long) adventure begins.

Along the way we are going to find plenty of items and clues and this is exactly where the problems start appearing: while we possess a journal, most of our notes and memos are only going be pictures, that seemingly provide no help solving the mysteries and puzzles ahead. Looks can be deceiving though, so they do help us, just not the way anyone would expect. On one occasion we find a book with a page displaying a yellow giraffe, a red fish, a blue(ish) star and a green letter 'e' within the text, only to find out later (after several attempts to find any meaning for it) that this is the colour code combination of an electronic drawer. No there's no indication, no text it's just there and that's it. "Puzzles" like this can cause weird moments, like being able to beat the whole game within a few minutes (an item which is basically the key to the final scene can be found almost at the beginning rather quickly by clicking around and guessing randomly). Some of the hints aren't bad and are actually useful (like the ones marking the correct positions of the window shutters of the dollhouse), but that's not the case most of the time. This leaves us with many intuitive puzzles and only handful of them can make good use of proper hints and clues.
Mystery Of Rivenhallows also makes the biggest mistake of all adventure games: most of the objects we find are keys for various locks. Searching for codes and passwords become refreshing in comparison.

The controls follow the usual point and click formula, but not without flaws here either: sometimes we have to click more than once on the given object/target so that the action can be registered.

To top it all off, the game isn't a sight to behold: it operates with plain semi-photorealistic scenes with lackluster colours and minimal amount of animations (nothing really, except for a few cutscenes). One could say it builds atmosphere, but in reality it just appears dull. There are also old(ish) black and white photos (and movie clips) presenting us events and people from the past, which is plausible.
There's hardly any sound effects except for the "ping" alert sound of finding clues and the usual door creaking. The music is mysterious sounding, but that's not nearly enough for salvation.

Mystery Of Rivenhallows looked like a promising minimum budget title with an interesting premise, but it failed to meet the expectations. At the end of the story the creators at least chose the only sensible conclusion, so it could be worse I guess. There are so many horror/thriller adventure games with great ambience available on Steam, that I really can't see any reason to recommend this game, not even to hardcore adventure enthusiasts.

So yeah - I have finished this "puzzle game" in 5 minutes in my first attempt.
Puzzles are a too easy, game feels like shovelware (UI, animations, sounds, menu... everything gave you feeling that this game was made with little or no of effort).

I would consider getting it for free for cards.
1€ would be a steal and they try to sell it for 5€
Just NO.

I accidentally solved the last puzzle first. I found out the end of the game immediately but didn't realize it. I continued the game thinking there was more to come but I eventually just got to the clue for the last puzzle and then had no idea what to do next. It was ....disappointing. The logic of the storyline was competely lost because I found the evidence before I had a reason to need evidence. Not that playing in order would have helped.

The game itself is very lackluster. The game is very short and the storyline leaves a whole lot to be desired. Who is the main character? I don't really know. Why do they care about missing kids? Apparently he grew up with them...but do you know their names? No...Do you know if they were close with the main guy? No. Do you know anything about them or their personalities. Nope.

The overlay and mechanics are clunky. There is nothing to stop you from doing the game out of order. And the developers seem to be confused about what they wanted this story to be about. There is a random ghost sighting but no explanation of who the ghost is and no further paranormal activity. At all.

Overall. I would not recommend this game.

I was honestly so shocked that my bottom jaw hit the ground real hard. Completely bamboozled I just had to look in the discussion boards to see if others had experienced this too. Yep, I was not the only one, others found it out just as quickly. On the other hand some had walked around for about an hour before realising that they could have just solved the puzzle at the beginning by themselves. I had bypassed the whole game within 6 minutes max.

The clueless Mexican developers http://www.ensenasoft.com/ should have known better. On what grounds they claim this is worth $5.00 is beyond me? If you want your monies worth I strongly suggest that you don't try to solve puzzles in this puzzle game or you could come across the ending quicker than you had hoped.

In fact the whole game from top to bottom seemed to be just a bare boned framework of a game. The puzzles are all easy, half I solved without even needing any clues whatsoever. There is hardly anything to click on in each room other than the puzzles, practically nothing to read story wise which is a complete shame because with the nice visuals and each room having its own unique twisted feel to it, a morbid full expose on the child experiments conducted would have beckoned my curiosity more.

Instead you’re just treated to a room with a dentist chair, a crane overhead with a hook and an abandoned assault rifle and the gasp expression of your main character when he declares you found the torture room. I'm not sure why your main character, who looks like 'Harry Potter' having an allergic reaction to a bee sting, finds this all too shocking. I'm pretty sure that assault rifles and overhead cranes are just normal tools of the trade for Russian dentists.

Anyway, in final, an overly simple point and click adventure puzzle game that could be over within six minutes if you’re too ambitious in puzzle solving. The real mystery of Rivenhallows is not about why the principal is doing work experience dentistry on the side, but more why on Earth is this marketed more than 50 cents?

Completed the game within 1 hour.
Not scary at all.
Game is fun to play.
Puzzles are very easy.
Story is good.
I guess the background music is the reason I kept playing this game. LOL.

Neat little game. The riddles are not exactly tough, and it took me only 45 minutes to finish, but it was downloaded in no time, runs perfectly on almost anything and the price is all right. Maybe a little too much for such a short game, but it's fine.

If you like point&click games and are looking for cheap, easy entertainment without having to pay too much attention for some boring trainride or something, which works on that crappy laptop you use for work or studies, and which takes up only 163 MB so that you could download it using your phone as a hotspot, Mystery of Rivenhallows is perfect.
